European Film Award 2017
The 30th European Film Award ceremony took place on December 9, 2017 at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele in Berlin . The prize is awarded by the European Film Academy (EFA). After last year the TV gala on the occasion of the celebrations for the European Capital of Culture in Wroclaw ( Poland had taken place), she was awarded for the 13th time in the German capital, the seat of the EFA. For the third time, Thomas Hermanns was selected as the moderator of the award ceremony .
Ruben Östlund's satire The Square was awarded as the best film, converting all of its five regular nominations into victories. The full nominations were announced on November 4th 2017 at the Seville European Film Festival .
During the award ceremony, the Ukrainian filmmaker Oleh Sentsov , imprisoned in Russia, was remembered. Wim Wenders , President of the European Film Academy, criticized the increasingly anti-European mood in the EU in a speech . European film producers Helena Danielsson , Rebecca O'Brien and Ada Solomon gave their opinion on the #MeToo debate.
French actress and filmmaker Julie Delpy and Russian film director and screenwriter Alexander Sokurow had already been selected as winners in advance . Delpy received the award for the best European performance in world cinema , while Sokurov received the award for a lifetime achievement . A seven-member jury also decided in advance on the awards in the categories of Best Camera , Best Editing , Best Production Design , Best Costume Design , Best Hairstyling and Make-up, Best Film Music and Best Sound .

On November 14, 2017, the winners of the jury awards were announced in Berlin, who were selected by a seven-member jury from the official shortlist for feature films and separately submitted films. The jury included the sound engineer Samir Fočo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), the composer Raf Keunen (Belgium), the film editor Melanie Ann Oliver (United Kingdom), the costume designer Vassilia Rozana (Greece), the make-up artist Susana Sanchez (Spain), the cameraman Łukasz Żal (Poland) and the production designer Tonino Zera (Italy).

The shortlist for the European Film Awards 2017 included 51 films, including the main winners of the Locarno Film Festival 2016 (Godless) , the Berlin Film Festival 2017 ( Body and Soul ) and the Cannes Film Festival 2017 ( The Square ) . Body and Soul and The Square were also selected by Hungary and Sweden as official candidates for an Oscar nomination in 2018 in the category of best foreign language film . Julie Delpy , French actress, director and film producer
Delpy was nominated twice in the past for a regular European film award: 1991 for Homo Faber ( Best Actress ) and 2007 for 2 Days Paris ( Audience Award - Best Film ). During her acceptance speech, Delpy pointed out that three weeks before the preparations for her new film with Daniel Brühl in Germany, funding of 600,000 euros had been lost. She offered to raffle a joint breakfast and to award a part in the film so that the project could continue to be realized.

Sokurow has been unsuccessfully nominated for a regular European film award four times in the past: 1988 for Days of Darkness (Best Youth Film), 1999 for Moloch ( Best Film ), 2001 for Elegia Dorogi ( Best Documentary ) and 2002 for Russian Ark ( Best Director ).

Since 2015, before the five nominations were announced, a shortlist of 15 documentaries has been presented, which is compiled by a selection committee consisting of members of the EFA and the European Documentary Network (EDN). Proposals from documentary film festivals as well as individual submissions will be considered. From the 15 pre-selected films, the more than 3000 members of the European Film Academy selected the nominees and the eventual winner.
