Florian Breitenberger (born November 11, 1983 in Merano ) is an Italian natural track toboggan runner . In the single-seater he has won three World Cup races and three times achieved third place in the overall World Cup . From the 2009/2010 season he also started in the doubles. In 2001, Breitenberger became Junior European Champion in the single seater. He won the bronze medal at world championships in 2013 with the team and in 2015 in the single-seater.

Career

Breitenberger increases since the winter of 1999/2000 at World Cup races in part in single seater. In his first season he drove three times in the top ten and finished 15th in the overall standings. At the end of the 2000/2001 season he was among the top five for the first time and he improved to ninth place in the overall World Cup. Since 2000 he has also competed in the title fights in the general class. At the 2000 World Championships in Olang he only finished 18th, a year later he finished sixth at the 2001 World Championships in Stein an der Enns and ninth at the 2002 European Championships in Frantschach . He achieved better results at the Junior World and European Championships, where he won the gold medal in 2001 and silver in 2002 and 2003 . In addition, he was Italian junior single-seater champion in 2001.

On January 20, 2002, Breitenberger celebrated his first World Cup victory in Hüttau , having never made it into the top three before. In the 2001/2002 season this was his only podium and he finished sixth in the overall World Cup. The Italian started the next winter with a third place in the parallel race in Völs , but did not make it into the top five in any of the other races and finished seventh in the overall standings. In the 2003/2004 season he never made it into the top five and fell back to eleventh place in the final ranking. At the 2003 World Championships in Železniki , he was fifth and at the 2004 European Championships in Hüttau ninth.

In the 2004/2005 season, Breitenberger was able to improve significantly. He achieved three second and one third place and thus, behind his teammates Anton Blasbichler and Martin Psenner, third place in the overall World Cup. At the 2005 World Championships in Latsch , he only missed the medal ranks by three hundredths of a second. On January 22nd, 2006, the Italian won his second World Cup victory in Olang and with another two podium places he reached third place in the overall World Cup in the 2005/2006 season as in the previous year. At the 2006 European Championships in Umhausen , he narrowly missed a medal again.

A third place in Moos in Passeier was Breitenberger's best result in the 2006/2007 season , which is why he fell two places to fifth in the overall World Cup. In the 2007/2008 season he succeeded in winning again in Umhausen and for the third time he came third in the overall World Cup. This time he was only one point short of second placed Gerald Kammerlander . At the 2007 World Championships in Grande Prairie , Breitenberger was fifth in the singles and sixth in the team competition and at the 2008 European Championships in Olang he finished seventh in the singles.

In the 2008/2009 season , Breitenberger was only able to contest the first three races, in which his best result was a fourth place in Unterammergau . He had to take a break for the rest of the season due to injury, so he was also absent from the World Cup in Passeier . In the winter of 2009/2010 he only competed in two single-seater World Cup races, which he finished in twelfth and seventh place. Since the middle of the season he has also started in the two-seater together with David Mair . In their three World Cup races they achieved fourth place in Latzfons as the best result and thus ninth place in the overall World Cup. The duo also took part in the 2010 European Championship in Sankt Sebastian and finished seventh in the doubles and fourth in the team competition. Breitenberger did not start in the single seater at the EM.

In the 2010/2011 season , Breitenberger took part in three of the six World Cup races in a single and with David Mair in a double. The best result was a sixth place in Kindberg . In the overall single-seater World Cup, he finished 17th and, as in the previous year, ninth in the overall double-seater World Cup. At the 2011 World Championships in Umhausen , Breitenberger was sixth in the singles and, together with David Mair, fifth in the doubles and in the team competition. Because David Mair did not take part in any competitions next winter, Breitenberger only started in the single-seater season in the 2011/2012 season . He won the overall ranking of the European Cup (formerly the Intercontinental Cup), competed in two World Cup races and reached fourth place at the World Cup final in Umhausen. At the European Championships in 2012 he was not at the start.
