Folker Reichert (born June 4, 1949 in Fürth ) is a German historian .

Folker Reichert studied history, German and Latin at the universities of Würzburg and Heidelberg and graduated in 1975 with the state examination. He received his doctorate in 1982 in Heidelberg with a thesis supervised by Hermann Jakobs on the prehistory of the late medieval corporate state in the Duchy of Austria . From 1982 to 1983 he was lecturer for the German Academic Exchange Service at the Foreign Language Institute in Shanghai (now the Foreign Language University of Shanghai ), where he held a visiting professorship in 1997. He completed his habilitation in 1990 in Heidelberg with a thesis supervised by Jakobs on the discovery of East Asia in the Middle Ages. After substituting professorships at the universities of Dresden , Cologne and Bonn , Reichert became professor of middle history at the University of Stuttgart in 1994 . Reichert has been retired since October 2012. In 2006 he was visiting professor at Tongji University (chin. 同济大学, Tóngjì Dàxué) in Shanghai (PR China), 2008/9 visiting professor at Yokohama State University (Japanese 横 浜 国立 大学, Yokohama kokuritsu daigaku, short: Yokokoku) in Yokohama (Japan), 2009 visiting professor at Chulalongkorn University (Thai: จุฬาลงกรณ์ มหาวิทยาลัย) in Bangkok (Thailand). He is a full member of the Commission for Historical Regional Studies in Baden-Württemberg .

The main research areas of Folker Reichert are the late medieval constitutional history, Asia and Europe in the Middle Ages, the history of discovery, the history of travel and discoveries, perception of others, pilgrimages to Jerusalem and the history of medieval studies in the 20th century. His interests in the Asian region result from his teaching activity in Shanghai . In 2004, together with Eike Wolgast , Reichert published Karl Hampe's war diary from the First World War. In 2009 he presented a biography about Hampe. In 2010 he was awarded the Wedekind Prize for German History by the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . Reichert is preparing a biography of the historian Carl Erdmann .
