Fountain L. Thompson
Fountain Land Thompson (born November 18, 1854 in Scottville , Macoupin County , Illinois , † February 4, 1942 in Los Angeles ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of North Dakota in the US Senate .
Born near Scottsville Thompson moved in 1865 with his family to Girard , where he attended public schools and the rights studied. Admittedly, he was admitted to the bar, but practically did not work in this profession. Instead, he worked in the commercial field; He was also a member of the Macoupin County government ( Board of supervisors ).
In 1888 he moved to the Dakota Territory and settled on a farm near the town of Cando . From 1890 to 1894 he was a Justice of the Towner County Court . Thompson also worked in real estate, banking, and agriculture; he also acted as the director of a school. In Cando he was initially an alderman before he took over the office of mayor there .
After the death of US Senator Martin N. Johnson , Fountain Thompson was appointed as his successor. He took up his mandate in Washington on November 10, 1909, but announced his resignation on January 31, 1910.
After the end of his short political career, Thompson resumed business activities in Cando before retiring in 1921. He then lived in Los Angeles, where he died in 1942 at the age of 87. Until then, he had been the oldest living US senator.
