Political career

Despite his lack of political experience, Hoeven was elected as a Republican candidate for the new governor of North Dakota in 2000. He defeated the Democrat Heidi Heitkamp with 55 percent of the vote and took office on December 15, 2000. In 2004 he was re-elected, with 71.3 percent of the vote very clearly against Joe Satrom. When he took office, Hoeven promised to support the following political priorities: school policy, the country's economic development, agriculture, new technologies, energy policy and the improvement of the quality of life in North Dakota. On January 11, 2010, Hoeven announced that he would run for the successor of the no longer running Democrat Byron Dorgan in the US Senate. In the primary of his party he had no competitor. After the polls in the run-up to the Senate election had shown that Hoeven had a clear lead over State Senator Tracy Potter , there was no surprise on the evening of the election: he prevailed with a 76 percent share of the vote. Hoeven handed over his governorship to his deputy, Lieutenant Governor Jack Dalrymple , in December 2010 , and took up his post in Washington on January 3, 2011.
