William N. Roach

William Nathaniel Roach (born September 25, 1840 in Washington, DC , †  September 7, 1902 in New York City , New York ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . He represented the state of North Dakota in the US Senate from 1893 to 1899 .

William Roach attended public schools, Gonzaga College High School and Georgetown University in his hometown of Washington . During the Civil War he worked as an administrative officer for the Quartermaster Department of the Union Army . In 1879 he moved to the Dakota Territory , where he settled in Larimore . It was there in 1885 that his political career began with membership in the territorial House of Representatives.

After the division of the territory into North and South Dakota , Roach stood for election as the first governor of the northern state in 1889 , but failed against Republican John Miller . In 1891 he ran again and lost again, this time to Andrew H. Burke . For this he was elected US Senator the following year as the successor to Republican Lyman R. Casey . He took his mandate in Washington from March 4, 1893 to March 3, 1899; when attempting re-election he was defeated by Porter J. McCumber .

Roach then withdrew from public life and died in New York in 1902.
