George Sinner

George Albert Sinner (born May 29, 1928 in Fargo , North Dakota ; † March 9, 2018 there ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He was the 29th governor of the state of North Dakota from 1985 to 1992 .

Early years and political beginnings

George Sinner studied philosophy at Saint John's University in Collegeville until 1950 . Between 1951 and 1952 he was in the US Air Force. He then began a long political career. Between 1962 and 1966 he was a member of the North Dakota Senate . From 1967 to 1974 he was a member of a government committee ( State Board of Higher Education ). Between 1971 and 1972 he was a delegate to a convention to revise the state constitution. From 1975 to 1979 he served as President of the Association of Sugar Beet Growers ( River Valley Sugar Beet Growers ). During this time he was also active in other agricultural associations.

North Dakota Governor

In 1982, George Sinner was elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives. Two years later, he managed to win the gubernatorial election with 55.3 percent of the vote against the Republican incumbent Allen I. Olson . After re-election in 1988, he was able to serve until December 15, 1992. During this period, agriculture went through the worst crisis since the Great Depression in the early 1930s, due to droughts and poor harvests . It was also during this time that North Dakota celebrated the 100th anniversary of joining the United States. The North Dakota National Guard was also deployed during the Second Gulf War in 1991. George Sinner was also a member of various governor's associations.

In 1992, Sinner decided not to run again and withdrew into private life. He was married to Elizabeth Jane Baute, with whom he had ten children.
