Franz-Josef Schmale (born January 24, 1924 in Duisburg ; † May 6, 2015 in Karlsruhe ) was a German historian of medieval history.

Franz-Josef Schmale was born as the fourth child of a foreman. After four years of primary school, he attended the humanistic State Landfermann Gymnasium in Duisburg from 1934 . In 1942 he passed the school leaving examination. From April 1942 to May 8, 1945 he was in the German Wehrmacht . In the summer semester of 1946 he began studying philology in the subjects of history, German and geography at the University of Bonn . There he received his doctorate under Walther Holtzmann in 1950 on the subject of Die precepta prosaici dictaminis secundum Tullium and the Konstanzer Briefsammlung .

During a lengthy research stay in Rome, he married Irene Ott in September 1953 . Their three children were born between 1955 and 1961, including the historian Wolfgang Schmale . He was assistant to Karl Bosl in Würzburg and completed his habilitation with a study on the papal schism of 1130. In the following years he taught there as a private lecturer and was professor for medieval history at the Ruhr University Bochum from 1964 until his retirement in 1989 . During this time he was also dean of the faculty twice . A few years before his retirement he suffered a stroke, which from then on became physically impaired. Since then he has mainly concentrated on editing, translations and articles. Important academic students were Dieter Berg and Hans-Werner Goetz . Schmale moved from the Ruhr area to the Black Forest. For the last two decades he lived in seclusion.

His main research interests were Bavarian , Franconian and Westphalian regional history , as well as church history with special consideration of the history of the Pope and Councils, and on the other hand the edition and criticism of sources and the writing of history, especially of the High Middle Ages. His introduction, published in 1985, Function and Forms of Medieval Historiography , became a standard work. Schmale published basic essays on Lothar III. and Frederick I , about the early bourgeoisie and about the meeting of Frederick Barbarossa with the French King Louis VII in Saint-Jean-de-Losne . Franz-Josef Schmale and his wife Irene Schmale-Ott developed a lively scientific productivity. They published numerous editions and text editions with translations on the history of the investiture controversy and German historiography as part of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica and the Freiherr vom Stein commemorative edition of the Scientific Book Society . As editor of the Freiherr vom Stein commemorative edition, he edited the sources on the history of Henry IV (1963), the Gesta Frederici Otto von Freising and Rahewins (1965), the chronicles of Frutolf von Michelsberg and Ekkehard von Aura (1972), the letters Gregory VII. (1978), the chronicle of Otto and Acerbis by Morena with further sources on the history of Friedrich Barbarossa in Italy (1986) and the chronicles of Otto of St. Blasien and the Marbach annals (1998). He became particularly well-known for his revision of Wattenbach's source studies , which is considered a guide to the sources of the history of the German Middle Ages. Schmale published critical work on Bruno's book vom Sachsenkrieg (1962), the Frutolf and Ekkehard Chronicle (1971), the Corveyer (or Paderborn) Annalen (1974) and the Austrian Annalistik (1975). For the Monumenta Germaniae historica he presented the Praecepta dictaminum by Adalbertus Samaritanus (1961) as an edition. He prepared an edition of Bern von Reichenau's letters (1961) for the Commission for Historical Regional Studies in Baden-Württemberg . He edited the Corveyer Annalen (1996) for the Historical Commission for Westphalia .

In May 1968 Schmale was elected a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia, and since 2009 he has been a corresponding member. In April 1986 Schmale was elected First Chairman of the Historical Commission, the inauguration took place in the fall of that year. In October 1989 he resigned prematurely from the chair for health reasons.
