Irene Schmale-Ott (born September 27, 1916 in Durlach ; † October 6, 2010 in Staufen im Breisgau ) was a German historian .

Irene Ott was the youngest of six children and was the only child to pass the school-leaving examination in autumn 1936. She then began studying at the Karlsruhe Teacher Training College , which she completed two years later with the state examination for teaching at elementary schools. From 1939 she studied Latin, German and history at the Universities of Marburg , Munich and Vienna . She received her doctorate from Theodor Mayer in Marburg in 1942 with a study on Gerhoch von Reichersberg . From 1942 to 1950 she worked in the Scriptores department of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica (MGH). As a result of the war, work was no longer continued in Berlin at the beginning of 1944, but in Pommersfelden . In 1948 she published a study on the concept of regalia in the 12th century. After the end of her work at MGH on October 1, 1950, she concentrated again on teaching for high schools. With the help of a one-year scholarship, Ott went to Rome in 1952. There she met Franz-Josef Schmale , who was to become a full professor for medieval history at the Ruhr University in Bochum in 1964 . In 1953 they married. Their three children were born between 1955 and 1961, including the historian Wolfgang Schmale .

With her husband she developed a lively scientific productivity. With him, but also alone, she edited several editions and translations as part of the Freiherr-vom-Stein commemorative edition of the Scientific Book Society, particularly on sources on the history of Emperor Heinrich IV. For the MGH she published editions on the Ottonian vita of Brunonis Ruotgers (1951) and of the Hohenstaufen Carmen de Gestis Frederici imperatoris in Lombardia (1965). In 1979 she edited the Translatio of St. Vitus von Corvey . In 1989 the issue of the so-called Chronographus Corbeiensis appeared . She worked on a revision of Wattenbach's source studies . She was unable to complete a critical edition of the Frutolf and Ekkehard chronicles that she had intended since 1945 .

Since 1970 she has been volunteering for the Catholic Women's Community in Germany (KFD). Schmale-Ott wrote not only articles for various women's magazines, but also contributions to the volume “Great women figures of occidental history from the 4th to the 16th century” (1987) and the presentation “What the Church owes to women” (1989). From 1971 to 1985 she was on the board and from 1981 to 1985 President of the Diocesan Association Essen of the KFD. She campaigned for the priesthood of women. She was awarded the Order of Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice and in 1986 the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class .
