The Geo-Natural Park Mother Hulda country with suffix Werratal.Meißner.Kaufunger forest is about 1130  km² large geothermal and natural park east to south-east of Kassel in Kassel district , Werra-Meissner and Hersfeld-Rotenburg in Hessen ( Germany ).

The geo-nature park includes areas of the Kaufunger Wald , the Söhre , the Hohe Meißner , the valley of the Werra , the Hessian Switzerland , the Ringgau as well as areas newly added in 2017 around Sontra , Herleshausen , Nentershausen , Großalmerode and Hessisch Lichtenau .

The park area extends from the eastern edge of the city of Kassel or the western edge of Nieste, Lohfelden , Fuldabrück , Söhrewald and Kaufungen in an eastward direction across the Werra near Bad Sooden-Allendorf , Eschwege , Meinhard and Wanfried to the Hessian- Thuringian border; on the Hessian-Lower Saxony border lies in the north - already in the Lower Saxony Münden Nature Park  - Hedemünden . In addition, the Geo-Nature Park extends from the Neu-Eichenberg district of Hermannrode and Witzenhausen in the north and Nieste in the northwest to Herleshausen and Nentershausen in the south. In addition to Wanfried, Eschwege and Bad Sooden-Allendorf, the park also includes Ringgau , Sontra, Waldkappel , Berkatal, Meißner , Hessisch Lichtenau, Großalmerode and Söhrewald.

The Geo-Naturpark borders in the north between the urban area of ​​Witzenhausen - via the municipal area of ​​Nieste - and the municipal area of ​​Niestetal on the Münden nature park and in the east between Herleshausen and Witzenhausen on the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal nature park . At the border to the last-mentioned park, it meets the Green Belt Germany, which runs along the former inner-German border .

The park, designated in 1962, was called the Meißner-Kaufunger Forest Nature Park for 55 years . At that time it was about 450 km². This made it the third smallest nature park in Hesse. In 2007 the park area was expanded to around 930 km², making it the third largest nature park in Hesse at the time. On January 18, 2017, the park was renamed Geo-Naturpark Frau Holle Land with the addition Werratal.Meißner.Kaufunger Wald . As of February 6, 2017, it has been around 1130 km² in size.

The new name of the park is said to have been proposed by the hotel owner Dovidat from Witzenhausen back in 2003. The concept was rejected for a long time by the nature park.

Witzenhausen-Burgberg glider airfield

The Witzenhausen-Burgberg glider airfield is located on the Burgberg ( 215.2  m ) between Witzenhausen and the Ermschwerd district . It is operated by the Witzenhausen air sports club. From there you can take off on sightseeing flights over the Geo-Nature Park.
