Johann Georg Oechsner (born February 18, 1822 in Mainz , † September 26, 1895 in Gau-Bischofsheim ) was Mayor of Mainz from August 25, 1885 to November 1, 1894, after he was appointed in June 1886.

Live and act

Born as the son of the secretary of the Rheinschiffergilde Wilhelm Oechsner and his wife Luise nee Trumpf, he studied law , became a member of the old Gießen fraternity Allemannia in 1844 and wanted to become a lawyer after his doctorate . But since he was actively involved in the fighting of 1848 , the Hessian Prime Minister denied him the practice of the profession. He later worked as a businessman and freelance agent.

On August 6, 1853 he married Maria Franziska nee Schlitz in Mainz and his second marriage on October 9, 1869 in Mainz was Caroline Josephine nee Schneider.

In 1866 he was elected to the second chamber of the Hessian state parliament as a representative of the constituency of the city of Mainz , to which he belonged until 1878. In 1874 he was elected city councilor and alderman. Formerly a member of the Liberal Reich Party, Oechsner held a mandate for the constituency of Hesse 9 (Mainz, Oppenheim) in the German Reichstag from 1877 to 1878 . In 1885 he succeeded the mayor Alexis Dumont, who died in office . From 1887 he carried the title of mayor.

During his tenure, the customs and inland port was built and some schools were founded. In 1894 Oechsner resigned from his office for reasons of age and ran an estate in Gau-Bischofsheim until his death in 1895 .

A street in the Upper Town of Mainz is named after him.
