George Peppard (1964)

George Peppard (born October 1, 1928 in Detroit , Michigan , † May 8, 1994 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor . He was best known as Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith from the 1980s cult series The A-Team , in which he played the lead role. His biggest hit was the male lead alongside Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's .

Life

1946 to 1948 Peppard was with the United States Marine Corps , which he left as a sergeant . From 1948 to 1949 he studied civil engineering at Purdue University . He got involved with the Purdue Playmakers, a theater company, and became a member of the Beta Theta Pi association, which is part of the Miami Triad . He graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh with a bachelor's degree in 1955 . He played theater at the Pittsburgh Playhouse .

Since his mother Vernelle Rohrer was an opera singer , he also tried his hand at this branch. He started out on the radio and attended drama school in New York. When his father died in 1951, he developed alcohol problems for the first time.

Peppard, who otherwise mostly appeared in rather second-rate films, earned lasting fame through his male lead as writer Paul Varjak in Breakfast at Tiffany's . He became known again in the 1980s in his role as Colonel "John 'Hannibal' Smith" in the television series The A-Team . Peppard was hired in 1980 to play "Blake Carrington" for the series The Denver Clan . After the pilot for the series was produced with him, he fell out with the producers and was fired.

George Peppard was married five times and had three children. His wives were: Helen Davies (one son, one daughter), Elizabeth Ashley (one son), Sherry Boucher-Lytle, Alexis Adams and Laura Taylor.

Peppard was a heavy smoker. In 1992 he was diagnosed with lung cancer and had part of his lungs removed. He died of pneumonia on May 8, 1994.
