The Gibraltar Eurobet Premier Division is the top division in Gibraltar men's football . It was founded in 1893. Due to a lack of clubs, the first championship started two years later. The first official championship took place in 1905.

history

Formation of the League Association (1893)

After the demand for football clubs in Gibraltar increased, the Gibraltar Football Association (GFA) decided to set up a league association. However, since there were too few clubs for a complete league, further clubs were "compulsorily founded". Up until then the only clubs were Prince of Wales FC , Gibraltar FC and Albion FC . Were founded to Jubliee FC , Exiles FC and Athletic FC . In 1895 the first - still unofficial championship - was held.

Official establishment (1905)

From 1905 the football league in Gibraltar was supported by the Spanish Football Association . There were also grants from England . The Victoria Stadium , the only stadium in Gibraltar to this day (and therefore also the venue for all league matches), and a trophy were arranged.

Joined UEFA (2013)

In May 2013, UEFA accepted the Gibraltar Football Association as a new member. This means that teams from the Gibraltar Football Association will be able to take part in the European Cup competitions for the first time in the 2014/15 season.

mode

Since the 2015/16 season, the league has been played with ten (instead of eight) teams. The increase from six to eight teams only happened two years earlier. This was necessary after joining UEFA in order to meet its criteria, which stipulate a league strength of at least seven teams. The champions take part in the qualification for the UEFA Champions League and the cup winners in the qualification for the UEFA Europa League . The tenth and thus last placed team is relegated to the Gibraltar Division 2 , in which the other 14 clubs play. The league games are free of charge.
