Giora Feidman
Giora Feidman (born March 25, 1936 in Buenos Aires ) is a clarinetist and instrumental soloist in klezmer music .
Life
Giora Feidman comes from a Klezmorim family , whose tradition he continues in the fourth generation. His ancestors appeared at weddings, bar mitzvahs and other celebrations in the shtetl of Eastern Europe. Feidman's parents were Bessarabian Jews who emigrated to South America around 1905 because of the onset of Jewish pogroms . His father was his first teacher. As a 13-year-old, he accompanied his father to appearances at weddings and other celebrations. The boy's talent was recognized, and from 1951 he received lessons at the music academy. Four years later, the orchestra of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires accepted him as a clarinetist at the age of 18.
Giora Feidman left Buenos Aires at the age of 22 to immigrate to young Israel. When he arrived, he - unlike most other immigrants - already had an employment contract in his pocket: he got a job as bass clarinetist with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra , to which he then belonged for 18 years. In the early 1970s he began his solo career as a klezmer musician and moved to New York. At the moment he is mainly active in Germany, to which he feels particularly attached. In 1975 Feidman married his manager, Ora Bat Chaim .
In 1984 he played a leading role with Esther Ofarim in Peter Zadek's production of Joshua Sobol's play Ghetto , which made him and his music known in Germany. In addition to klezmer music, his concert programs also include George Gershwin's works, tangos from his Argentinian homeland and, in the 2000s, increasingly symphonic music by contemporary Israeli composers (Ora Bat Chaim, Betty Olivero ) as well as classical clarinet literature such as Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A major or arrangements of Songs of Franz Schubert . Since 2002 he has been touring Germany several times a year with the organist Matthias Eisenberg .
Appearances in the German films Jenseits der Stille by Caroline Link and Die Comedian Harmonists by Joseph Vilsmaier as well as his participation in John Williams's Oscar-winning score for Steven Spielberg 's Schindler's List (together with Itzhak Perlman ) made Feidman known to film audiences in the mid-1990s.
The music theater work Nothing but music (2005) , developed with the authors Stephan Barbarino , Jan Linders and his wife, the Israeli composer Ora Bat Chaim, tells of stages in his life. The work premiered in May 2005 at the Grand Théâtre de la Ville du Luxembourg , followed by a major European tour. In March 2008 the piece could be performed at the Teatro Franco Parenti in Milan with Italian actors and the original musicians in the local language. In July 2008, the performance was invited to the renowned Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto , where it played three performances in the Teatro Romanum.
On World Youth Day 2005, Giora Feidman played in front of around 800,000 Christians and Pope Benedict during the vigil ceremony on August 20th. Feidman's constant efforts to achieve Jewish-German understanding and reconciliation were the decisive factors for his appointment by the organizers and expressly by the Vatican and the Pope.
In addition to this event, Giora Feidman appeared in the Christian-Jewish context at several Evangelical Church Days , Catholic Days and Ecumenical Church Days . On the cruise ship Europa , there was an encounter with the Gitanes Blondes during a concert tour in 2010 . Feidman was enthusiastic after the joint concert and has since performed with the four Munich-based artists. The soloist and the ensemble toured Germany together in 2012 and performed at the Festival 28 Years Songs on a summer evening at Banz Monastery. In the same year the CD Giora Feidman & Gitanes Blondes "Very Klezmer" was released .
In 2017 Feidman, who appreciates the music of the Beatles, went on a tour “Feidman Plays Beatles!” In Germany and Switzerland with the Rastrelli Cello Quartet .
Quotes
“ Germany is my home, no question at all. Yes Yes Yes. I'm a Jew, but when I play I'm a musician. You and I were not involved in the disaster of the past. Why should we atone for it? We take responsibility, we work together . "
Honors
Feidman received the German music award ECHO KLASSIK in 1997 and 2003 in the category “Classical music without borders”.
In 2001, the President of the Bundestag, Wolfgang Thierse, honored him with the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his special merits as a “great ambassador of reconciliation” .
Giora Feidman received the 2005 International Bridge Prize for International Understanding for his decades of commitment to “reconciliation between cultures”, between Judaism and Christianity, Germans and Jews, generations and classes through his music .
