Grand Isle is a town in Aroostook County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 467 inhabitants in 262 households on an area of 91.6 km². Grand Isle is right on the border with Canada .

According to the United States Census Bureau , Grand Isle has a total area of 91.63 km², of which 89.59 km² are land and 2.05 km² are water .
Geographical location
Grand Isle is in the north of Aroostook County on the border with Canada . The border is formed by the Saint John River on the southern bank of which the town is located. The name Grand Isle goes back to the larger of the two islands in the Saint John River Grand Isle , the island further west bears the name Thibodeau Island . Several smaller rivers run through the area, they all flow into the Saint John River. There are two larger lakes in the area of the town, one in the east and the other in the west. The Long Lake is located southwest of the Town. The surface of the town is rather flat, the highest point is the 325 m high Cold Mountain .

history
In addition to the main town of the same name, Grand Isle has two associated villages: Lille, not quite 5 km east of the main town on US Highway 1 , and Notre Dame, which is even further east. The state border with Canada runs along the St. John River, US Highway 1 and the railroad runs parallel to it on the US side through the town.
The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church is a Grade I listed building in Grand Isle. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 under number 73000100. Today the building houses the Musée Culturel du Mont-Carmel , a local museum. The former Catholic Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel , is one of the few remaining 19th century Acadian churches in northern Maine.
