history
In 1828 a settlement was established under the name Fairbanks. Due to border disputes between Canada and the USA, the Aroostook War broke out in 1838 , which was ended in 1842 by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty . On April 4, 1859, the place became independent. The economic factor was initially logging, later also agriculture , especially potato cultivation. In 1881, the New Brunswick Railroad was the first rail link. In 1895 the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad was completed. After the Aroostook State Normal School was founded in 1908 , it was renamed the University of Maine at Presque Isle in 1968 . On January 1, 1940 Presque Isle was granted City status. Between 1941 and 1961, the United States Air Force maintained Presque Isle Air Force Base here , which served as a departure point for planes in World War II and the Korean War. This airfield later became the local regional airport, from which the first Atlantic crossing in a balloon ( Double Eagle II ) was started on August 11, 1978 .
