Reports
background
During the two weeks between the Brazilian Grand Prix and the third round of the World Championship of the year in Long Beach, Carlos Reutemann decided to end his Formula 1 career. As a replacement, Mario Andretti then jumped in as the second driver alongside Keke Rosberg at Williams . The rest of the field remained unchanged.
Due to small changes to the route, one lap in Long Beach was around 200 meters longer than in previous years. The number of laps was therefore reduced by five to 75 laps.
training
Andrea de Cesaris surprisingly secured the first and only pole position of his Grand Prix career. For Alfa Romeo it was the twelfth and last overall. Behind Niki Lauda , who qualified for second place on the grid, followed the two Renault team- mates René Arnoux and Alain Prost . Bruno Giacomelli and the reigning world champion Nelson Piquet formed the third row.
run
At the start de Cesaris was able to defend his top position. With an overtaking maneuver against Lauda, Arnoux was able to take second place in front of Lauda, Bruno Giacomelli and Gilles Villeneuve .
When Giacomelli tried to overtake Lauda on lap six, he collided with Arnoux, eliminating both drivers and allowing Lauda to pursue de Cesaris. In the 15th lap he took the lead and quickly gained a lead. Meanwhile , John Watson had fought his way past Prost, Piquet, Rosberg and Villeneuve to third place.
Piquet and de Cesaris were canceled due to driving errors and the resulting collisions with the walls lining the route. Villeneuve also made a mistake trying to overtake Rosberg, but was able to continue the race as he was able to steer his car into a run-off zone in good time. A pit stop by Watson prevented a McLaren one- two. Lauda achieved his first win after his comeback in the third race. It was his 18th Grand Prix success overall. Rosberg took second place ahead of Villeneuve.
Shortly after the race, Villeneuve was disqualified because the double rear wing he was using was classified as non-compliant. This brought Riccardo Patrese to third place in front of Michele Alboreto , Elio de Angelis and John Watson.
