development

Commercial college on Ritterstrasse (1911)

HHL was founded in April 1898 as a private commercial college on the initiative of the Leipzig Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the German Association for Commercial Education based on the ideas of the pioneer of commercial college ideas, Gustav von Mevissen . After moving several times, it had its headquarters since 1910 in the building designed by Fritz Schumacher on Ritterstrasse (today the Geschwister-Scholl-Haus ). In 1946 it was integrated as a faculty into the University of Leipzig , but in 1969 it was given back at least partial autonomy as the successor to the closed university for domestic trade .

HHL main building on Jahnallee

In 1992 the university was closed as part of the amendment to the Saxon University Act . In the same year it was re-established as a private university business school by the Leipzig Chamber of Commerce and Industry . The first students were enrolled in 1996, and in 2012 it was renamed HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management . Today the university is located at Jahnallee 59, on the site of the former German University for Physical Culture (DHfK) at the Elster basin .

Controversy over tax financing and misappropriation of funds

It is criticized that the privately operated university is repeatedly financed by the state of Saxony and thus by tax money.

In June 2014, the magazine Der Spiegel reported on "tangible problems" in the university's business model. In its current annual report, the Saxon State Audit Office assumes that HHL is now directly and indirectly dependent on state money. According to the Court of Auditors, HHL resides rent-free in buildings in the state of Saxony . This causes costs of 343,000 euros per year, after a planned expansion it would even be 620,000 euros from 2017. Furthermore, the charge is made that the university has misappropriated funds. In 2011 and 2012 tax money totaling 1.4 million euros is said to have flowed as donations, whereby HHL is said to have not used large parts of the money for the actual purpose.

As early as 1994, the university was given an interest-free loan of DM 25 million from the state of Saxony, which should actually be repaid in 2014 at the latest. But the “protective screen just in case had to be extended until 2020”, according to Der Spiegel. From 2006 to 2012, deficits totaling almost 6 million euros are said to have been offset by the loan. In 2013, too, HHL posted a loss.
