Handlová (German Krickerhau , Hungarian Nyitrabánya - until 1907 Handlova ) is a town in Slovakia with 16,890 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located on the Handlovka River in the Hornonitrianska kotlina , surrounded by the Žiar Mountains and the Vogel Mountains , 15 km from Prievidza and 20 km from Žiar nad Hronom . It belonged to the so-called Hauerland .

history

Church in Handlová

The city was first mentioned in 1367 and at that time it was inhabited by German settlers, the Carpathian Germans . Coal mining began in the second half of the 18th century.

Like many other German-speaking places in Slovakia, Krickerhau was the scene of massacres of the German civilian population by Slovak partisans during the Slovak National Uprising in 1944. 130 Germans were killed in Krickerhau. The remaining German population was expropriated and expelled by the Beneš decrees .

In 1960 Handlová received its town charter and today consists of the three parts of the municipality Handlová, Nová Lehota and Morovno (both incorporated in 1976).

The mining accident in August 2009

On the night of August 10th to 11th, 2009, the worst mining accident in the history of Slovakia occurred in Handlová , in which 20 people were killed and 9 injured. The cause of the accident was a fire that broke out in the coal mine.

To fight the fire, miners and members of a rescue team descended to a depth of over 300 meters. About two hours later there was an explosion in an open side shaft of the pit . The 20 people on the rescue team were in the immediate vicinity of the explosion site at this time. The explosion was probably caused by carbon monoxide , which spread during the previous fire.

Prime Minister Robert Fico ordered national mourning .

Flood 2010

After the dam of the Handlovka River broke, Handlova was flooded, as was Prievidza , and a man was also killed.

Nová Lehota

The village Nová Lehota (German Neuhau , Neuhauerisch Neihaa / Najhaa , Hungarian Újgyarmat or Új-Gyarmat ) was mentioned for the first time in the books of the 48th Archbishop of Esztergom Ippolito I. d'Este .

In 1487 as Noua Leotta,

  • 1773 Nowa Lehota,
  • 1784 Neuhay,
  • 1804 Uj Lehota, Neuhey,
  • 1930 Neuhay

and since 1940 Nová Lehota - Neuhau.

Until the Second World War Neuhau was almost exclusively inhabited by Germans; the village then consisted of 242 houses and had about 1400 inhabitants. After the expulsion of the German population in 1946, the place was repopulated mainly with Slovaks from Hungary. Today it has less than 300 inhabitants. In 1976 Nová Lehota was incorporated into Handlová.

population

In a 2001 census, Handlová had 18,018 inhabitants. 96.14% of them were Slovaks, 0.86% Roma, 0.85% Hungarians, 0.67% Czech and 0.24% German.

46.10% did not belong to any religious community, 44.74% were Roman Catholic and 2.42% Lutheran.
