Harold S. Bucquet

Harold Spencer Bucquet (born April 10, 1891 in London , England , United Kingdom , † February 13, 1946 in Los Angeles , California , USA ) was an American film director of English origin.

life and work

Born in London, Harold S. Bucket came to the United States as a teenager . In 1914 he became a US citizen and fought in the first World War in the United States Army . After starting out as an extra , he became an assistant director at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in the 1920s . In the 1930s he directed short films, of which Torture Money won an Oscar at the 1938 Academy Awards and They're Always Caught was nominated for one in 1939 , each in the Best Short Film category (2 film roles) .

His directorial debut in feature-length films was Dr. Kildare: His first case with Lew Ayres and Lionel Barrymore in the lead roles. Lionel Barrymore is said to have suggested him because of the good collaboration in the film Banditenlied , which was directed by Lionel Barrymore. For this film, one for developed B-movies surprisingly successful film series with Dr. Kildare . Harold S. Bucquet directed the first eight of the nine films, as well as Calling Dr. Gillespie , the first part of the follow-up series without Lew Ayres. In 1944 he was the first director of an A-movie when he replaced the sick Jack Conway in the movie Dragon Seed. He confirmed this with his next film, Too Smart for Love . After that he was supposed to take over the direction of the film The Legacy and also began with it, but had to withdraw from the project for health reasons.

Shortly afterwards, Harold S. Bucquet died of cancer. He was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale .
