The main road 5 is a main road in Switzerland .
This road leads from Lausanne along the southern foot of the Jura and the Aare to Koblenz . It is only of secondary importance since the transit traffic on the section Lausanne to Aarau mainly uses the A5 and A1 autobahns . On the not yet built or opened sections of the motorway around Biel / Bienne , this traffic uses main road 5, which is also the national road N5 on this section .
history
The main road 5 follows a traffic route between Lake Geneva and the Rhine , which was used early as a waterway, but only very late as a land route. The steep slopes on the north shore of Lake Neuchâtel made road construction difficult and the political fragmentation of this area ensured that none of the neighboring cantons wanted to spend large amounts of money on building a continuous road. After 1740, Hauptstrasse 1 , which led as far as possible across the territory of the canton of Bern, was expanded into a Chaussee based on the French model .
Only after the independence of the former Bernese subject areas Aargau and Vaud in 1803 a serious interest in road construction emerged in the two newly founded cantons. Around 1820 the long neglected road between Wildegg and Aarau was rebuilt. In 1836 a new road was built between Neuchâtel and La Neuveville. In 1836–1839 a new road was built between Solothurn and Biel.
course
The street begins in Lausanne , where it joins Hauptstrasse 9 . It leads to Yverdon-les-Bains and along Lake Neuchâtel to Neuchâtel . Along the southern foot of the Jura, the road continues along Lake Biel to Biel / Bienne . From there to the end point in Koblenz, the main street runs along the Aare, even if it is rarely visible. The road leads along the Jura bend through the Mittelland to Solothurn , Olten , Aarau and Brugg , before going down the river to Koblenz . It ends at Hauptstrasse 7 .
The total length of this predominantly non-directional thoroughfare is around 206 kilometers.
