The Heiliggeist Church is a Roman Catholic church built in 1912 in the Swiss city of Basel . It is located in the Gundeldingen district and is consecrated to the Holy Spirit .

Together with the outbuildings, the church forms a building block corner in the street grid of the quarter . You enter a larger inner courtyard through a vaulted columned hall between the church and the rectory .

Building history

In 1897 the Roman Catholic Church acquired a plot of land on today's Thiersteinerallee. In 1907 the architect Gustav Doppler was commissioned to build the church. The original plans were slightly modified in the following years by the Freiburg diocesan builder Max Meckel before the foundation stone was laid in 1911 . On October 26, 1912, the Holy Spirit Church was inaugurated by Bishop Jakob Stammler , and 600 young people received confirmation .

Architecture and equipment

The church is designed in the late Neo-Gothic style of southern German origin as a three-aisled basilica with a lateral front tower .

Inside the church has a neo-Gothic features with three from Freiburg Joseph Dettlinger carved winged altars , floral stained glass , murals with the Stations of the Cross , pews and confessionals .

The cell vault is typical of pre-Reformation urban parish churches in southern Germany. The drafts for the building sculpture came from the two Freiburg sculptors Ludwig Kubanek and his colleague Hans Weißburger. The painting was done by Franz Schilling , who also came from Freiburg im Breisgau.
