Hendrik Streeck (born August 7, 1977 in Göttingen ) is a German medic. He is Professor of Virology and Director of the Institute for Virology and HIV Research at the Medical Faculty of the University of Bonn .

Live and act

family

Hendrik Streeck's mother, Annette Streeck-Fischer , is a child and youth psychiatrist and teaches as a professor in Berlin, his father Ulrich Streeck is a psychiatrist and sociologist and taught at the University of Göttingen, his uncle Rolf-Eberhard Streeck was a molecular geneticist at the University of Mainz .

Education and personal life

After graduating from the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium in Göttingen, Streeck completed his community service in the St. Franziskus Hospital in Münster and in the Weender Hospital in Göttingen. Streeck first studied musicology and business administration at the Free University of Berlin , but switched to human medicine after the intermediate examination . During his studies he was already working on his dissertation at the Partners AIDS Research Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School . In 2007 he was at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University of Bonn with the dissertation impact of antiretroviral therapy early during acute HIV-1 infection on clinical, virological and immunological course of HIV-1 disease to Dr. med. PhD .

Scientific career

After graduating in human medicine in 2006, he returned to Harvard Medical School as a postdoctoral fellow. In 2009 he became an Instructor in Medicine, and in 2011 an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. From September 2012 to 2015, Streeck led the immunology of the US Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research at Walter Reed Military Hospital in Silver Spring , Maryland . He was also Assistant Professor at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences and Adjunct Faculty (Lecturer) at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University . In 2015 Streeck followed the call to Essen, where he took over the chair for medical biology and in the same year founded the institute for HIV research. He is still a visiting scientist at the MHRP. In October 2019, Streeck accepted the call to the Medical Faculty of the University of Bonn and took over the management of the Institute for Virology. For this he moved - together with the Institute for HIV Research - to Bonn.

The Institute for HIV Research works under his direction on several focal points: The focus is on researching new prevention methods such as research into a prophylactic HIV vaccine or pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). On the one hand, new vaccine concepts are being developed and tested, and on the other hand, he is concerned with immunology and the question of how protective antibody responses arise. One focus is the investigation of the role of follicular T helper cells in the development of protective antibody responses. The institute also researches how HIV diseases are favored in old age in order to develop potential therapeutic options. One goal is to develop strategies that can control HIV infection without medication.

Since 2016, Streeck has been running a doctoral program with the Instituto Nacional de Saúde in Mozambique to introduce young medical professionals to scientific work in the field of HIV research.

In addition to HIV, the institute researches other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). In 2018, BRAHMS was used in Germany to conduct a study on sexually transmitted diseases in people with higher risk behavior. The study tries to understand who is most often infected with which pathogens in Germany.

In January 2019, this study was expanded to include other European countries including France, Italy, Spain, Poland and Hungary under the name STIPnet. In parallel to this study, a European prevention network for HIV and STIs is being set up under the direction of Streeck.

Streeck is a member of the board of trustees of the German AIDS Foundation and was elected chairman of its board of trustees in June 2019. He is the local congress president of the IAS Conference 2021 in Berlin, to which up to 7,000 participants from all over the world are expected.

Activity in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic

During the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic , Streeck is leading the COVID-19 case cluster study at the University Hospital Bonn on the community of Gangelt . This should provide political recommendations for action. It collects data on the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and the number of unreported cases of those actually sick. Streeck had complained that the Robert Koch Institute did not carry out such a study itself. The first results of the study were expected in the second week of April 2020 and announced on April 9, 2020: In a press conference with the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Armin Laschet , Streeck recommended that politicians enter phase 2 of the assessment of the German Society for To enter hospital hygiene d. H. to begin removing restrictions on the population. In his podcast, Alexander Kekulé described the study as a “special case” in an initial statement and advised to be careful with recommendations based on the study. Even Christian Drosten criticized the recommendations Streeck. One could not deduce anything from the presentation, said Drosten at an expert talk. Streeck replied: “Of course, that ultimately has to be decided by politics. We provide data and facts. ”The roles of Prime Minister Laschet and the PR agency StoryMachine were also criticized .

In an interview with the Handelsblatt on March 27, 2020, Streeck said that with social distance you can contain the infection process, so restrictions on contacts are important. But he doesn't know whether it makes sense to completely paralyze public life. On the other hand, there are other factors that he can only answer as a private individual and not as a virologist. You also have to ask yourself what that does to society.

On March 31, 2020, Streeck was invited as a talk guest by Markus Lanz in a TV program on ZDF . In an interview, he said, among other things, that other alternatives should have been examined before a lockdown was decided. In his opinion, it would have been better to wait and see what the recently ordered measures, such as B. bring hygiene and cancellation of major events. He said the "virus needs to be given time to see results in the long term". He was also of the opinion that the government should have consulted several experts from different specialist areas on a strategy. As an example, he cited that virologists had different approaches among themselves, even without being in competition. For example, Christian Drosten, whom he appreciates very much, would work “virus-centered” while he personally looks at what “the virus is doing to people”. But other experts should also be interviewed. He thinks it is a shame that the government approached the matter "monothematically" at the beginning.

For wearing a protective mask, he referred to the recommendation of the WHO, which does not recommend a general mask requirement. Masks should be reserved for medical personnel. However, they also offer protection for fellow human beings if someone wears them who is sick. At the moment the resources are not there if everyone was wearing a mask, but admitted that many infections (approx. 40%) take place during the symptom-free period. Wearing a mask in public in Asia / China, where most people generally wear a mask, did not prevent the outbreaks there either. Wearing masks at major events is not effective, as they become damp after a short time and no longer have any effect.

In an interview with the journal Research and Teaching on April 2, 2020, Streeck said that the political measures were quite justified. The containment was not as effective as it could have been due to the rather poor coordination at the level of the federal states as well as a lack of concrete practical guidelines from the Robert Koch Institute. He also criticized the lack of a central warehouse for important medical items such as protective equipment, smear materials, chemicals and biological material for the tests.

When asked how to know when the measures taken can be scaled back, he said the course of the pandemic could not be reliably predicted. There are only guesses and assumptions about this. If the numbers go down, you know that the measures are taking effect. Then you have to continue driving with the handbrake on. Instead of drastic measures, one should find creative solutions that reduce the number of contacts. An infection, regardless of the virus in circulation, always occurs when many people are in a confined space for a long time. So here you can either reduce the number of people or the duration of contact.

In the press conference on the presentation of the interim results of the Heinsberg study on April 9, 2020, Streeck said that the conclusion from the interim results is that the virus concentration can be generally reduced by adhering to strict hygiene measures and that this will reduce both the severity of the disease and the Spread can be counteracted. This should be seen in combination with the simultaneous development of immunity. Adhering to hygiene measures will also have a beneficial effect on mortality.

Here, Streeck expressly recognizes the action taken by politicians and the measures taken up to that point, which he introduced with phase 1 ("Social quarantine with the aim of containing and slowing down the pandemic and avoiding overloading the critical supply structures - especially the health system") of a four- Phase strategy of the German Society for Hospital Hygiene (DGKH) equated. The success of the measures, as well as the fact that the people have learned in the meantime which hygiene measures are important, allows the conclusion that phase 2 of this strategy can now be entered, ie "an incipient, controlled withdrawal of quarantine while ensuring more hygienic conditions Framework conditions and behavior ".

Honors

In 2009, Hendrik Streeck received the research award of the German AIDS Society .
