The St. Franziskus Hospital has been a hospital and academic teaching hospital in Münster since 1857 and is sponsored by the St. Franziskus Foundation . It has around 600 beds and treats around 30,000 inpatients and 60,000 outpatients annually.

history

In the years 1853 and 1854, the then Münster bishop moved at the request of Johann Georg Müller , the Order of Nurses of St. Francis of Telgte in the - at that time not yet unincorporated - Münster Mauritz quarter . The Franziskus Hospital was built according to the plans of the Münster diocesan master builder Emil von Manger and opened in 1857. In the beginning, beds were available for a total of 50 patients who were treated by a single internist . The care of the patients was the responsibility of the sisters of the religious order, whose mother house is in the immediate vicinity of the hospital in Münster-St. Belonging to Mauritz , found. The order also took over the sponsorship of the hospital.

In order to maintain and further improve the level of care, a nursing school was attached to the hospital. It received state recognition in 1908. The additionally created children's nursing school was officially recognized in 1928.

In 1950 plans were made for an extension. From 1960 to 1962 this was built in the form of a high-rise on Hohenzollernring. The eight-story building, 46 meters long and 15 meters wide, had 181 seats and was intended to accommodate the newly emerging medical disciplines, including an X-ray therapy department. The west wing of the old building was also renovated during these years; The administration of the hospital, which had been distributed until then, was amalgamated in it.

In December 2001, a baby hatch was set up in cooperation with the youth welfare office and the social service for Catholic women , which is the only one in the Münsterland .

Main entrance after the renovation

At the beginning of the 21st century, the St. Franziskus Hospital was rebuilt and expanded. A large part of the construction project, which cost around 16 million euros, was for the new Franziskus Carrée medical service center , which opened in 2007. It enables the medical center to be expanded from seven to 14 medical practices and contains five new outpatient operating theaters . In March 2013, after a construction period of 17 months, the St. Franziskus Hospital put the 10.3 million euro extension building on Ward I on Hohenzollernring into operation. The south-facing head building houses a total of 30 barrier-free rooms for a total of 42 patients on six levels with an identical floor plan. There is a lounge on each level where the patients can sit and have drinks and small meals. The infection station was also expanded on the ground floor. There the hospital now has a total of six additional single rooms. Personnel changing rooms and space reserves for future doctor and function rooms are located in the basement.

For a further 17.7 to 18 million euros, the renovation of the building erected in 1962 and the expansion of bed block I to the level of the glass staircase are to be carried out. In addition, the number of beds in the ward on Hohenzollernring is to be increased from 190 to 246. According to the original plans, this work should be completed by 2016, but according to current plans, it will no longer begin in 2013 and is expected to extend into 2020.

Specialist departments and institutions

In the St. Franziskus-Hospital there are currently 18 specialist and two hospital departments that are run as clinics. Ten of them are run as a main department with their own beds, and radiology and nuclear medicine as main departments without their own beds. The Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine is neither the Department nor it has its own beds. Internal medicine is also divided into four special departments.

The St. Franziskus Hospital now has the following medical departments:

In addition to these clinics, there are also the clinics for ophthalmology and ear, nose and throat medicine , both of which are run as clinical departments . Since the completion of the expansion and reconstruction of the hospital in 2007, an additional clinic for spinal surgery has been run as Orthopedics II and a breast center .

In addition to the nursing service, there is also a social service available for patient care, which assists patients with social, personal and insurance-related questions. In addition, there is a pastoral care service of the Protestant and Catholic Church.

There is a helipad on the roof of the hospital.

Gynecology and obstetrics

The Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics is one of the largest maternity hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia and is the largest in Münster with 1,799 births in 2012. Of these 1,799 births in 2012, 576 were performed as a caesarean section , 91 of them at the patient's request. Due to the closure of the obstetrics departments of several smaller hospitals in the Münster area, the number of births in the St. Franziskus Hospital is increasing, so that by the end of 2012, 1,853 children were born in the hospital, including triplets and 51 twins. As a result, the number of 1977 births was counted in 2013. In 2013, more than 5100 children were born in Münster, 39 percent of them again in the St. Franziskus Hospital.

Since January 2014, the pastoral care team and the Mauritz Franciscans have been organizing a blessing ceremony for newborns and their parents on weekdays.

The Level I Prenatal Center cares for numerous patients with high-risk pregnancies. The St. Franziskus-Hospital Münster pursues a comprehensive concept to avoid premature births. The St. Franziskus Hospital in Münster is the only German hospital to offer courses on promoting mother-child bonding and prenatal analyzes for high-risk patients.

Head of the gynecology and obstetrics department is shared by chief physicians Heinz Albers and Werner Weisbach.

A girl who was born in the St. Franziskus Hospital in Münster on January 29, 1994 with a birth weight of around 790 grams instead of the usual 1300 grams and a height of 32 centimeters in the 30th week of pregnancy and who had to receive intensive medical care for 16 weeks before it could be discharged home with a weight of 2550 grams, visited the gynecology, obstetrics and neonatology wards in mid-August 2013 to keep her father's promise to say thank you for the care in the first months of life after graduating from high school. The press reported on this visit nationwide.

As part of the inpatient admission of the patient, a detailed discussion takes place with a clinic pharmacist, who systematically records all of the patient's medications and checks them with regard to dosage, interactions and tolerability. The aim of this so-called drug discussion is to record undesirable side effects and drug interactions and thereby optimize drug therapy safety .

Baby hatch and anonymous birth

The baby hatch , which was set up in 2001, is looked after by the wards for neonatology and pediatric intensive medicine and had been used six times by the end of 2012, one time in 2012. Three of the six babies were given back to the birth mothers who subsequently reported to the St. Franziskus Hospital. For eight months, the mothers have the opportunity to contact the hospital, which is also possible anonymously. The hospital also offers anonymous births . For six of those born anonymously between July 2001 and the end of 2012, anonymity was subsequently revoked at the request of the mother.
