Hildur Ingveldardóttir Guðnadóttir [ ˈhɪltʏr̥ ˈkvʏðnaˌtouhtɪr̥ ] (born September 4, 1982 in Reykjavík ) is a classically trained Icelandic cellist and composer who, in addition to her own projects, accompanies many well-known artists with her cello and also composes film music. She lives and works in Berlin .

overview

Hildur Guðnadóttir started playing the cello as a child and later studied at various universities in Reykjavík and at the University of the Arts in Berlin . After completing her studies, she went back to Iceland, where she was heavily involved in the younger art and music scene. Together with her friend Jóhann Jóhannsson , she ran the Kitchen Motors organization , a combination of think tank , label and artist collective. She played with the group Múm or the Angel project, consisting of Ilpo Väisänen and Dirk Dresselhaus , and is a member of the Stórsveit Nix Noltes ensemble, which is inspired by Greek and Bulgarian dance music. Hildur has also taken part in numerous music projects beyond the borders of her own country, such as recordings by the Finnish experimental band Pan Sonic . She worked with the Swedish sound artist BJ Nilsen and the also Swedish band The Knife .

Hildur also works as a conductor and composer. Her better-known work includes the live soundtrack to Derek Jarman's 1980 film In The Shadow Of The Sun , in which the English industrial pioneers Throbbing Gristle and the New London Chamber Choir, which she conducts, also participated. She composed the soundtrack for the play Sumardagur ("Summer's Day") which premiered at the Icelandic National Theater.

In 2007 she released her folk-inspired solo debut Mount A under the name Lost in Hildurness , which was released on the Icelandic label 12tónar and was recorded almost single-handedly. The recordings were made partly in New York, partly in an Icelandic wooden house, which is famous for its acoustics that suit the cello. Hildur played there next to the cello vibraphone , viola and harp , and supplemented the instruments with subtle vocal work. In 2009 the second solo album Without Sinking followed , which was released on the British label Touch . In addition to Jóhannsson, Hildur's father, the clarinetist Guðni Franzson, is also involved in the recordings. Hildur performs live regularly, usually accompanied by a trumpeter and a saxophonist. She toured with Jóhannsson, Fever Ray and the American indie folk band Animal Collective .

Since 2011 she has also been regularly active as a composer for film music and also works on television productions. She composed a. a. the score for Sicario 2 and Joker (2019). For the latter film, the score of which she composed largely based on the script before the shooting, she received the Golden Globe Award for best film score in 2020 and received an Oscar in the same category . Since 1997, she has been the first woman to be awarded an Oscar for best film music.
