history

Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria , the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century. Since 1490 it has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns .

During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times. Since 1918 the place belongs to the federal state of Upper Austria.

After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . In 1945 Upper Austria was restored.

Hinterstoder belonged to the Windischgarsten judicial district until 2012 and has been part of the Kirchdorf an der Krems judicial district since January 1, 2013 .

The name “Stoder” first appears in a document from a Kremsmünster letter around 1240 and is translated from Slavic as “cold” or “stony ground”. As Tassilo III. In 777 the cathedral on the Krems was built, the valley was inhabited by the Slavs. The German-speaking area ended on the Traun, Slovenia began on the other side. As is well known, the cathedral on the Krems was primarily intended to initiate the conversion of the Alpine Slavs.

The valley basin of Windischgarsten including the wooded slopes and the surrounding mountains were already in the 11th century in the possession of the diocese of Bamberg , founded by King Heinrich II in 1007 . As a result, on the initiative of this diocese, the monastery and rule Spital am Pyhrn was established on the soil of this spacious donation area. It was primarily intended - originally a hospital - to accommodate pilgrims who went to the Eternal City, to Rome, or Aquileia, from where they - especially the Crusaders - began their arduous journey to the Holy Land .

The Stodertal belonged to this domain - most recently as a collegiate monastery of secular canons under a provost - until its dissolution in 1807.

The part of today's municipality to the left of the Steyr River belonged to the sovereign Klaus rule, first identified in 1192, which in the meantime was again incorporated into the rule of Spital.

In the time of Joseph II the beginnings of a development towards a community fall. Installed by the Spital Abbey in 1774, Adam Langeder was the first teacher in Hinterstoder. He was previously a pen cutter in the hospital. In 1778 the emergency school was elevated to a parish school.

  • Parish: In 1783, when Georg Hammer and Matthäus Lichtenauer were the pastor of Vorderstoder, the Collegialstift Spital, of which Josef Grundtner was provost at the time, decided to establish an independent parish in "inner Stoder". This decision was - as the still existing copy of the deed of establishment expressly indicates - not of his own initiative, but at the instigation of Emperor Joseph II. Various foundations were used for this purpose, in particular the “Gütl am Kleinbruderhof” (now vicarage) was purchased by the Spital Abbey for the future pastor and its income allocated to him.
  • Church: In 1783 the construction of the church, a late baroque hall church with a dome, began and was completed in two years. There were 18 bricklayers, 1 stirrer and 17 carpenters working. The benediction took place on “16. Autumn moons of the year 1787 “Sunday after the exaltation of the cross, therefore also called“ Holy Cross Church ”. The solemn blessing by Provost Josef Grundtner von Spital took place via a delegation from the Bishop of Linz. The church furnishings were mainly provided by the Abbey Hospital. By decree of October 20, 1787, the Bishop of Linz, Count Herberstein, appointed the cooperator of Vorderstoder, Matthäus Lichtenauer, as pastor of Inner- (Hinter-) stoder, who later became the last provost of Spital. From that day on, Hinterstoder had his own pastor and was completely independent and self-sufficient in pastoral care. In 1787 the new school building was also built (next to the church).

19th century

From the time of the Napoleonic Wars it is reported that Pastor Franz Xaver Gesser (1807–1810) averted a lot of evil from the community in the presence of enemy troops through clever behavior and good hospitality of the officers and encouraged the residents about the “arduous sacrifices wrested from them” and thereby brought about good order. Pastor Gesser, who came from Biberach in Swabia, spoke French and was very well educated, as he had studied canon law, church history and antiquity in Vienna and Graz. There are also reports of “Saxons” that were located in Hinterstoder in the neighborhood, who demanded great sacrifices from the population, plundered them and thus increased the prevailing need.

On November 6, 1817, the communities of Hinterstoder and Vorderstoder were given the right to hold an annual horned cattle market on October 10 in Hinterstoder. It is the oldest surviving parchment document that was personally signed by Emperor Franz I. It was not until the middle of the 19th century, when the manorial power came to an end and the free local congregation “Innerstoder” emerged within the boundaries of the Josephinian cadastral congregation , that a life of its own developed that initiated the upward trend.

In the second half of the 19th century, forest management and hunting, as well as large estates - religious funds , dukes of Württemberg a . a.

On April 20, 1874 Hinterstoder received that had been post technically assigned on August 1, 1842 (which belongs to San Pancrazio village) Dirnbach, one (with Windischgarsten on foot offered connected) post office, in 1894 a telegraph connection with Windischgarsten and in 1909 a telephone connection.

In 1879 the music club was founded, which is still active today as the Hinterstoder traditional costume band.

Tourism began in 1890 (first record of overnight stays by foreigners). In 1897 the community was given a gendarmerie post .

At Easter 1893, the 53rd People's Free Library of the Upper Austrian People's Education Association , created on September 23, 1872 (in Linz), was opened (325 volumes at the beginning).

From 1893 the planning began for the step-by-step expansion of the Stodertal-Straße from the Pyhrnpass-Straße in the Steyr-Bruck.

The first doctor who practiced in the community was Adolf Hauser in 1897. Before that, the medical supervisors were based in Vorderstoder.

20th century

In 1905 the volunteer fire brigade was founded . In 1906 the last section of the Pyhrnbahn was completed and rail traffic opened. The train station outside of the municipality was originally called Dirnbach-Stoder and was only later renamed Hinterstoder upon request.

In 1906 an association was founded to beautify the place. Skiing began in 1910. Apart from only a few athletes, this was useful for the local hunters and foresters until then. On December 10, 1912, the first prize skiing from the Schränkenzieher Alm to the parish hall took place.

With the fundamental redesign of the Stodertal road, the valley was only really opened up. The Hinterstoder Ort - Hinterstoder Bahnhof post car line was built in 1924.

Electrification began with the construction of a small electrical works on Plaisbach on a cooperative basis in the years after the First World War . The power supply was only ensured with the construction of a 25 kV connection line to the Hofmann overland network.

The Second World War brought a flood of people relocated and bombed out to Hinterstoder. The number of inhabitants more than doubled. There was great need.

The US High Commissioner for Austria , General Mark W. Clark , chose Hinterstoder as his vacation home ( Jochems-Villa , Hinterberg, Haistrieglweg 1). The Allied Commander in Chief and later US President General Dwight D. Eisenhower was also a guest here several times. General Clark broke ground in 1950 for the construction of the four-class elementary school and had arranged a donation from Cardinal Francis Spellman , which enabled the purchase of new church bells.

In 1957 the local water pipe was built, in 1964 the water pipe and sewage system were built on the Hutterite soils. The construction of a cable car in 1959 (double chair lift) in two sections to the Höß area contributed significantly to the creation of a second tourist season in winter.

In 1967 the municipality received the right to use a municipal coat of arms. With the same resolution, the municipal colors "yellow-blue" were approved.

In 1969 the Bärenalm ski area was opened up. In 1986 the first ski world cup race , a men's slalom, took place in Hinterstoder . This gave tourism another boost.

In 1993 the first cavern sewage treatment plant in Central Europe was put into operation in Poppenberg . The houses in the center and near the village and also the Höß ski area were connected to the sewer network. The development of the peripheral areas continued in the years that followed.

In 1994 the site joined the “ village renewal ” campaign of the province of Upper Austria and became a village renewal community. As a result, structural changes were made to the thoroughfare, the design of the street space and the facades of the houses. In 1998 Hinterstoder was also included in European village renewal and in 2018 was awarded a “ European Village Renewal Prize”.

The coat of arms marks the geographical location of the municipality, which is characterized by the mighty mountain range of the Spitzmauer, the Priel-Stockes and the Warscheneck-Gruppe, which includes the Stodertal.
