The University of Design and Art FHNW (HGK FHNW) in Münchenstein near Basel offers artistic and design training at Bachelor and Master level. Around 750 students are enrolled at the HGK FHNW.

history

The history of the HGK begins in 1796, when the drawing and modeling school, later the general trade school , was founded in Basel . In 1886 there was a painting class, and from 1917 also one for sculpture. In 1893 the trade school with the integrated trade museum moved into premises on Petersgraben. In 1930 the school was reorganized and an arts and crafts department was created - the so-called arts and crafts school. From 1917 to 1979, specialist classes and preliminary courses were offered here, and from 1968 the advanced training class for graphics under the direction of Armin Hofmann and later Emil Ruder , internationally known as the Basel School of Design . In 1980, the arts and crafts department of the general trade school became the Basel School of Design . Five years later the Audiovisual Art course was started. During this time u. a. Pipilotti Rist Audiovisual Communication in Basel.

The HyperWerk design course has been available at the university since 1999. In the same year, the two courses of study Industrial Design and Media Art were started as the Department of Design and Art at the Aargau University of Applied Sciences. A year later, the HGK became the department of the Basel University of Applied Sciences. The HGK of the Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz FHNW was created in 2006 through the merger of the Department of Design and Art of the Fachhochschule Aargau FHA, the HyperWerk course and the HGK Basel. Since 2008 there have been four master's programs: Master of Arts in Visual Communication and Iconic Research, Master of Arts in Design - Masterstudio Design, Master of Fine Arts and Cooperation Master for Design and Art / Higher Education.

There are bachelor's degrees in visual communication, industrial design, fashion design, HyperWerk, interior design and scenography, art, and professions in design and art.

The master’s degree programs are Master in Visual Communication and Iconic Research, Master of Arts in Design - Master Studio Design, Master of Fine Arts, Cooperative Master in Teaching Professions for Design and Art / Higher Education.

Institutes

There are institutes for visual communication, interior design and scenography, fashion design, industrial design, art, apprenticeships for design and art, HyperWerk , integrative design, aesthetic practice and theory as well as experimental design and media cultures.
