Huissen (pronunciation: Hüuss ; in dialect: Hüuss ) is a city in the eastern Netherlands . It is located in the province of Gelderland and is now part of the municipality of Lingewaard . Huissen has 18,947 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). The city was granted city rights around 1314 .

description

Huissen is the largest town in the municipality of Lingewaard and is located on the Lower Rhine between Arnhem and Nijmegen .

The place consists of the district of Huissen-Stad (the old "city" and adjacent residential areas), Huissen-Zand (a second adjacent core, mainly horticulture) and the Zilverkamp district that was created in the 1970s. After a few smaller new districts, the Loovelden district has been under development since the beginning of the 21st century.

To the east of the city one can find large embankment areas. In the north, the Huissensedijk forms the border with Arnhem. At the small industrial area Looveer, Huissen is connected to the Liemers by a ferry across the Nederrijn . Across the river, a small section of the embankment belongs to Huissen. The industrial area Pannenhuis is located south of the city.

The old center is characterized by shopping streets and restaurants.

history

middle Ages

Huissen was first mentioned as a trouser hymn in 814 ; after that (after an invasion by the Vikings ) the city was named Hosenheim . From 1033 the current city name developed over several intermediate stages: Huschenheim or Heuschenheim zu Heuschen or Heussen . The last preliminary stage was Huessen , now written as Huissen .

In 1242 the place fell into the hands of the Counts of Cleves , while the rest of the area went to the Counts of Geldern . Huissen was therefore an enclave of Kleve in Geldern. Before the year 1314, Huissen was granted city rights. For the Klever counts and dukes Huissen was particularly important as a customs post. In 1502 Karl von Egmond tried to conquer Huissen by besieging the city. His troops were defeated by the Clevers; an event that is still re-enacted every year today.

Eighty Years War (1568-1648)

Huissen formed a Roman Catholic enclave in the otherwise Protestant Netherlands during the eighty year long freedom struggle of the Netherlands against the Spanish line of the House of Habsburg . In 1614 the place fell together with the Duchy of Kleve on Brandenburg and from 1701 it belonged to Prussian territory. Between 1795 and 1815 the place changed hands several times. It was not until the Congress of Vienna (1815) that Huissen went back to the Netherlands and was officially taken over by this in 1816.

Second World War

During the Second World War , Huissen was badly damaged in an air raid by the German Air Force on the night of May 13-14, 1943.

Also in 1944 ( Operation Market Garden ) the village was bombed several times, whereby the historic city center was (almost) completely destroyed. The evacuation began in September 1944, so on April 2, 1945 there were no residents when the place was liberated by British troops.
