International fencing championships 1934

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1934 World Fencing Championships (officially the 1934 European Championships ) took place in Warsaw from June 20 to 29, 1934 . Eight competitions were held, six for men and two for women. Although officially designated as European championships, the competitions were also open to non-European participants and were therefore also viewed as world championships by the international umbrella organization Fédération Internationale d'Escrime . The most successful nation was Hungary with a total of seven medals, five of which were gold. For the first time, an electrical hit display was used for the epee competitions .

organization

The competitions took place in Warsaw from June 20th to 29th and were organized by the Polish Fencing Federation. Individual and team competitions were held in men's florets, men's epee and men's saber. Only foil was fought for women. The tournament was directed by the international Technical Directorate consisting of Jean Lacroix (France), Carlo Anselmi (Italy) and Thaddeé Zubrycki (Poland).

The competitions were known as European championships, but were in principle also open to non-European participants. For this reason, the early European championships were subsequently generally recognized as world championships. Official world championships took place for the first time in 1937.

48 fencers took part in the individual epee competition. Twelve of them qualified for the finals. There Pál Dunay (Hungary) prevailed with eight wins and three defeats. Gustaf Dyrssen (Sweden; seven wins) came in second ahead of his compatriot Hans Drakenberg and the Italian Saverio Ragno (also seven wins but more hits). The preliminary rounds took place on Tuesday June 26th and the final round on June 27th.

The epee competitions were fought for the first time at an international championship with an electrical signaling system. Hits were indicated by a light bulb and an acoustic signal (bell). Some of the detectors and electric swords were still prone to errors. Since there were only two systems, the sword fights dragged on for a long time. In the course of the fighting, the sword of an Italian fencer was confiscated, in which a hit could be indicated by touching two bare wires without the sword tip touching the opponent.
