The Invictus Games are a Paralympic sporting event for disabled soldiers, which was first held in London in 2014 in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park . The word invictus comes from Latin and means undefeated, undefeated . The word games , on the other hand, comes from English and means games or sports events .

Over 300 athletes from 13 countries took part in the first staging of the sporting event. The soldiers had fought alongside British troops primarily in the war in Afghanistan and had been wounded during combat operations.

prehistory

In 2013, Britain's Prince Harry took part in the US Warrior Games in the USA as a member of a team of British soldiers , which gave him the idea of holding a similar event in the UK. With the support of Boris Johnson , Lord Mayor of London, the Organizing Committee of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the UK Department of Defense , the event was set up within ten months. The project was supported with £ 1 million from the Royal Foundation , a charity fund set up by Prince Harry, his brother William, Duke of Cambridge , and his wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge . The UK Treasury contributed another million from a fund set up with penalties from the Libor scandal . Sponsor of the Games was Jaguar Cars / Land Rover .

On March 6, 2014, Prince Harry announced in the London Copper Box that the Invictus Games would be held the following September. The prince said the games should “demonstrate the importance of sport in recovery, support rehabilitation and demonstrate life beyond disability” (“demonstrate the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and demonstrate life beyond disability”). Another long-term goal is to remember the involvement of British troops in the Afghanistan war .
