History, Economy and Transport

The area originally belonged to the Bergheim community and was incorporated into Salzburg in 1950. During the Second World War, the slaughterhouse moved from Froschheim , where it had become a nuisance, to the Salzach floodplains north of the city. In 1950 the city and Bergheim swapped the area for the Plainberg, which was incorporated in 1939, because of the slaughterhouse. The cadastral community Bergheim II , to which parts of Itzling and Kasern also belong, includes this change of area at the time, small parts in the south of Itzling Nord belong to the cadastral community Itzling, which was incorporated in 1935.

In 1939 the construction of the autobahn began and it was routed as far as Zilling , but largely stopped in the war years in 1941. The motorway was not opened until 1957.

The Salzach regulation began here at the foot of the Plainberg at the end of the 19th century, before that the road to Oberndorf ran directly through the village of Bergheim, which is a little higher on the mountain. Then a flat road, today (L118  Bergheimer Landesstraße , here Oberndorfer Straße and further B156  Lamprechtshausener Straße ), was possible, parallel to the Salzburg local railway . After the great flood in 1959 , when the motorway bridge collapsed after the supported pillars had given way, an improved base had to be secured.

In the post-war years, businesses gradually settled here, and the small-scale slaughterhouse settlement emerged , and the Hagenau substation was built for the municipal utilities and the local railway. In the 1990s, the completely overloaded junction L118 / B156, where the B156 continues towards Lengfelden , was revised.

Today the area is counted as an independent district due to its location. Due to the partially jointly operated spatial planning of Salzburg and the surrounding area , the municipal boundaries are less important than in previous decades.
