Iva Zanicchi [ˈiːva dzaˈnikki] (born January 18, 1940 in Ligonchio , Reggio Emilia province ) is an Italian singer , television presenter and actress . She won the Sanremo Festival three times . She was a member of the European Parliament for the Italian party Popolo della Libertà .

Career

Music, film and television

Zanicchi first took part in a singing competition in 1961, at the Castrocaro Festival she reached the finals in 1962 and was signed by the Ri-Fi Records label . The singer made her debut with the single Zero in amore / Come un tramonto , both songs being written for her by Gorni Kramer . Her first success came in 1964 with Come ti vorrei , an Italian version of the song Cry to Me by Solomon Burke . At the Sanremo Festival in 1965 she presented (together with Gene Pitney ) I tuoi anni più belli , but missed the final; She also took part in Un disco per l'estate and released the first, self-titled album.

Already in 1966 Zanicchi returned to Sanremo and this time was able to reach the finals with La notte dell'addio (with Vic Dana ). Participation in Un disco per l'estate , the Festival di Napoli and Scala reale ( Canzonissima ) followed. In the latter show she was in Claudio Villa's “team” , with whom she then presented Non pensare a me at the 1967 Sanremo Festival . With this she achieved her first victory in the festival (in the year of Luigi Tenco's suicide ). The second album was Fra noi , which also contained the song Ci amiamo troppo , a cover of River deep, mountain high by Ike and Tina Turner .

After an unsuccessful participation in Sanremo in 1968 (with Per vivere by Umberto Bindi , presented together with Udo Jürgens ), Zanicchi achieved the second victory in 1969 : The song Zingara , presented together with Bobby Solo , was the favorite and could meet expectations correspond. The version by Solo also peaked at the top of the chart. Zanicchi, on the other hand, was given the opportunity to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1969 , where she came 13th (out of 16) with Due large lacrime bianche . At the Sanremo Festival in 1970 , Zanicchi was again among the favorites and landed with L'arca di Noè (at the side of songwriter Sergio Endrigo ) in third place.

She also had success at Canzonissima in 1970 with Un uomo senza tempo ; the song was included on the album Iva senza tempo , while the second competition entry Un fiume amaro introduced the album Caro Theodorakis , which was written entirely by Mikis Theodorakis . The following year, however, Zanicchi worked with Charles Aznavour , which resulted in the album Caro Aznavour . Also in 1971 was the album Shalom , which contained traditional Jewish songs. Meanwhile, the song La riva bianca, la riva nera , which the singer had presented at Un disco per l'estate and Festivalbar , was a great chart success. After the further hit Coraggio e paura (included on the album Fantasia 1972) she took part again in 1973 with Mi ha stregato il viso tuo in Canzonissima (the song was included on Dall'amore in poi ).

After further album releases, Zanicchi went to the Sanremo Festival in 1974 with Ciao, cara, come stai? into the race and won for the third time. To date she is the only singer with three festival victories. In 1975 she had a smaller hit with the Testarda io written by Roberto Carlos and brought out the album Io sarò la tua idea , which was dedicated to Federico García Lorca . The singer returned to the charts in 1976 with the children's song Mammatutto and appeared as a guest at the Sanremo Festival in 1977 . After a number of other albums, she ended the collaboration with her record company Ri-Fi in 1979 .

At the Sanremo Festival in 1984 , ten years after her last participation, she reached ninth place with Chi (mi darà) , but could not follow up on earlier successes with the album Quando arriverà . In 1985 she made her debut as a presenter in the TV quiz Facciamo un affare on Canale 5 . While she continued her work on television, including for the Rai , she did not give up music and released albums such as Care colleghe (1987), Nefertari (1988) or Come mi vorrei (1991). In 1998 she also appeared as an actress in the highly acclaimed film The Unleashed New Year's Eve by Marco Risi .

In 2001 Zanicchi's autobiography Polenta di castagne was published . At the Sanremo Festival 2003 she came last with Fossi un tango , after which she released a tango album. Further albums followed in 2009 and 2013.

politics

In 2004 Zanicchi was Forza Italia's candidate for a seat in the European Parliament. With 35,000 votes, it initially missed entry into parliament. In May 2008, she took the place of Mario Mantovani, who gave up his parliamentary mandate to take a seat in the Italian Senate, as the representative of the successor party PdL. In the elections of June 2009 it was confirmed by the voters. As an EU parliamentarian, she was a member of the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and deputy chairwoman of the Development Committee from 2009 to 2014 . She was a member of the delegation to the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly. She served as a deputy on the Committee on Culture and Education and on the delegation for relations with the United States . After she was not re-elected in 2014, Zanicchi announced her withdrawal from politics.
