The 15th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in the municipal casino in Sanremo from January 28th to 30th in 1965 and was moderated by Mike Bongiorno together with Maria Grazia Spina .
procedure
After the success of the previous year, everything remained the same in the organization of the festival in 1965: 24 songs, twelve of which made it to the final; an international partner for every emerging singer; an orchestra with changing conductors; Voting only by demoscopic juries; Orientation by the Azienda Turistico Alberghiera ; Organization by Gianni Ravera . Among the 16 conductors this year were Augusto Martelli , Enrico Intra , Franco Pisano , Gianfranco Reverberi , Franco Monaldi , Riccardo Vantellini and Enrico Simonetti .
In the field of participants was again found Milva , Pino Donaggio , last year's winner Gigliola Cinquetti and Bobby Solo , returned from the international stars only Gene Pitney back. Newcomers, however, were Dusty Springfield , Kiki Dee , Petula Clark or Connie Francis , from the Italian side Ornella Vanoni , Iva Zanicchi , Bruno Lauzi , Fred Bongusto , Nicola Di Bari and the two winners of the festival by Castrocaro , Franco Tozzi and Vittorio Inzaina . Udo Jürgens , Bernd Spier and Audrey Arno were represented from German-speaking countries, all three of whom reached the final. The absence of the two old stars Claudio Villa and Domenico Modugno , whose submissions neither made it through the preselection, made itself felt; Stars like Rita Pavone , Mina , Adriano Celentano and Gianni Morandi also stayed away from the event. In protest against the rule that each label was only allowed to send a maximum of three songs in the competition, the Italian RCA also boycotted this edition, which meant that international stars such as Paul Anka , Neil Sedaka and Dalida could not participate.
During the festival, Pino Donaggio's Io che non vivo (senza te) was particularly popular, with Jody Miller as an international performer . Vito Pallavicini , co-author of the song, was the best represented songwriter for this edition with a further six songs in the competition. But the victory went to the song Se piangi, se ridi , sung by Bobby Solo and the New Christy Minstrels , which was also attributed to the fact that Solo had already been considered a “moral winner” in 1964 and his Una lacrima sul viso afterwards best-selling single, so the juries would have wanted to compensate him for it this year. For songwriter Mogol it was already the third victory in Sanremo, also this year he had four more songs in the race.

successes
Sales in 1965 were weaker than in the previous year, but at least twelve songs made it into the top 20 of the Italian single charts, including one non-finalist ( Cominciamo ad amarci ). Amici miei made the chart entry in both the version of Gene Pitney and that of Nicola Di Bari. Of the finalists, only Vieni con noi (Milva / Bernd Spier) missed the charts. The winning song was the most successful, but Le colline sono in fiore also landed a number one hit in the version of the New Christy Minstrels. The favorite Io che non vivo (senza te) developed into an international hit, at the latest when Dusty Springfield recorded an English version under the title You Don't Have to Say You Love Me .
Bobby Solo appeared with the winning song as a representative of the host country at the Eurovision Song Contest 1965 in Naples and reached fifth place.
