The 48th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1998 from February 24th to 28th at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Raimondo Vianello with Eva Herzigová and Veronica Pivetti .

procedure

The Ariston Theater, venue of the Sanremo Festival

The 1998 festival was again organized for the Rai by Mario Maffucci . Raimondo Vianello was hired as moderator, assisted by Eva Herzigová and Veronica Pivetti . The new rules provided for 14 participants each in the main and newcomer categories. The three best placed newcomers from the “small final” on Friday evening were automatically admitted to the final in the main category; Otherwise there were no eliminations.

Due to the changed rules, the newcomer category received more attention than usual this year; Annalisa Minetti in particular was able to impress with Senza te o con te . The contributions in the main category, on the other hand, had a rather difficult time with the audience and critics, only Amore lontanissimo from Antonella Ruggiero and Dormi e sogna from Piccola Orchestra Avion Travel stood out. The guest list included big names like Madonna , Robbie Robertson , All Saints , Michael Bolton , Backstreet Boys , Ricky Martin , Celine Dion , Robert Plant , Jimmy Page , Bryan Adams and Aqua .

The small final ended without any surprises with the victory of Annalisa Minetti, who was thus admitted to the final together with Lisa (Semper) and Luca Sepe (Un po 'di te) . The Critics' Prize, however, went to Eramo & Passavanti with Senza confini . In the final, Antonella Ruggiero threatened to drop out due to a sore throat, but she still managed to perform. In the end, she received the most votes in her category, but in the end Minetti was able to prevail and thus also win in the main category. Piccola Orchestra Avion Travel received the critics award.

successes

The 1998 festival contributions remained relatively unsuccessful. Only the sixth-placed Luce von Mango and Zenîma could reach the top 10 of the Italian single charts.

Annalisa Minetti also wanted to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 1998 , but the Rai refused to participate in the European competition because it had proven unsuitable for the Italian audience. Instead, Minetti was sent to the Chilean festival of Viña del Mar in 1999 .
