The 50th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 2000 from February 21 to 26 at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Fabio Fazio with Luciano Pavarotti , Teo Teocoli and Inés Sastre .

procedure

The Ariston Theater, venue of the Sanremo Festival

After the success of the previous edition, Fabio Fazio was entrusted with the moderation of the festival a second time. He was supported by Luciano Pavarotti , Teo Teocoli and Inés Sastre . This year, the artistic direction was transferred to a commission consisting of Sergio Bardotti , Luis Enríquez Bacalov , Sandra Bemporad , Mauro Pagani and Enrico Silvestrin . The voting system was retained, which was determined in equal parts by demoscopic juries and a jury of experts (giuria di qualità) ; this time the latter consisted of Mike Bongiorno , Goran Bregović , Dario Argento , Roberta Torre , Carlo Alberto Rossi , Alessio Vlad , Roberto Cotroneo , Luca De Gennaro , Paola Maugeri and Mario Pezzolla .

The number of participants increased significantly, with 16 participants in the main and 18 in the newcomer category; Eliminations were not planned. Long-serving candidates such as Matia Bazar , Amedeo Minghi , Gianni Morandi , Marco Masini , Umberto Tozzi and Alice alternated with newer stars such as Irene Grandi , Max Gazzè , Samuele Bersani , Subsonica or Piccola Orchestra Avion Travel . The only debutant in the main category was Gigi D'Alessio , already a star in Naples but still largely unknown at national level. Among the guests were Jovanotti , Oasis , Tina Turner , Aqua , Lene Marlin , Robbie Williams , Antonello Venditti , Bono and The Edge .

In the small final on Friday, Jenny B and Semplice sai won in the newcomer category; in addition, she was awarded the Critics' Prize ( ex aequo with Lythium and Noël ). In the main category, the critic's award went to Samuele Bersani's Replay . The final ended with a surprise: although the opinion polling jury only came in eleventh place, Piccola Orchestra Avion Travel with Sentimento was able to get the victory thanks to the votes of the expert jury , ahead of Irene Grandi with La tua ragazza semper and Gianni Morandi with Innamorato . Jury members made it clear that they had tactically coordinated and deliberately gave the most popular entries the lowest rating in order to let Sentimento win.
