J. Sargeant Reynolds

Julian Sargeant Reynolds (born June 30, 1936 in New York City , †  June 13, 1971 ibid) was an American politician . In 1970 and 1971 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Virginia .

Career

Sargeant Reynolds was born into a wealthy family. His father was the president and chief executive officer of Reynolds Metals Company . In 1947 he graduated from St. Christopher's School in Richmond . He was then enrolled at Woodberry Forest College in Orange until 1954 . Eventually he studied at the Wharton School , which is part of the University of Pennsylvania , until 1958 . Then he worked in the family business. He has also lectured in economics at the University of Richmond .

Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . He served in the Virginia House of Representatives in 1966 and 1967 ; from 1968 to 1969 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1969 Reynolds was elected lieutenant governor of Virginia alongside A. Linwood Holton . He held this office between 1970 and his death on June 13, 1971. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. In the summer of 1970 he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He then died of this disease. Previously, he was seen as a beacon of hope for his party at both the state and federal level. He was considered a possible candidate for the next gubernatorial election. A jump in the US Senate would have been conceivable. Optimists saw in him a future presidential candidate.
