Shelton Leake

Shelton Farrar Leake (born November 30, 1812 near Hillsboro, Albemarle County , Virginia , † March 4, 1884 in Charlottesville , Virginia) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Shelton Leake finished his preparatory studies and then taught as a teacher. He studied law and began practicing as a lawyer in Charlottesville in 1835 after receiving his license. Leake also had a political career. He served in the Virginia House of Representatives in 1842 and 1843 . In 1844 he was elected to the 29th US Congress for the fifth constituency of Virginia . He stayed there from March 4, 1845 to March 3, 1847. After his tenure in the US House of Representatives , he resumed his practice as a lawyer. Leake successfully ran for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia in 1851 , a position he held between 1852 and 1856.

In 1858 he was elected as an independent Democrat for the sixth district of Virginia in the 36th US Congress . He worked there from March 4, 1859 to March 3, 1861. He then finally withdrew from the political stage and devoted himself to his work as a lawyer. He died in Charlottesville in 1884 and was buried in Maplewood Cemetery .
