Thomas M. Bayly

Thomas Monteagle Bayly (born March 26, 1775 in Drummondtown , Accomack County , Colony of Virginia , †  January 7, 1834 in Accomac , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1813 and 1815 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Bayly was the father of Congressman Thomas H. Bayly (1810-1856). He attended the Washington Academy in Maryland and then studied at Princeton College until 1794 . After a subsequent law degree and his license to practice law in 1796, he began to work in Accomack County in this profession. He also worked as a planter . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Federalist Party . Between 1798 and 1801 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives ; from 1801 to 1809 he was a member of the State Senate . During the British-American War of 1812 he was a colonel in the Virginia State Militia.

In the congressional election of 1812 Bayly was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 13th  constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded William A. Burwell on March 4, 1813 . Since he refused to run again in 1814, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1815 . After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Bayly returned to work as a lawyer and planter. Between 1819 and 1831 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives on several occasions. In 1829 and 1830 he was also a delegate to a constitutional convention in his home state. He died on January 7, 1834 on his Mount Custis plantation near Accomac, where he was also buried.
