S. Otis Bland

Schuyler Otis Bland (born May 4, 1872 in Gloucester , Gloucester County , Virginia , †  February 16, 1950 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1918 and 1950 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Otis Bland attended Gloucester Academy and then the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg . After studying law and becoming a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. At times he also worked as a teacher. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

After the death of MP William Atkinson Jones , Bland was elected to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the due by-election for the first Virginia seat , where he took up his new mandate on July 2, 1918. After 16 re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on February 16, 1950 . During this time the First World War ended . From 1933 to 1941, the federal government's New Deal laws were passed in Congress under President Franklin D. Roosevelt . Since 1941, the work of Parliament has been shaped by the events of the Second World War and its consequences. Bland also saw the beginning of the Cold War . During his time in Congress, the 18th , 19th , 20th and 21st amendments were ratified. Between 1933 and 1947, Bland was chairman of the merchant marine and fisheries committee.

The United States Maritime Administration (MARAD) named the general cargo ship Schuyler Otis Bland after the deceased politician.
