Canvassing for Dave Brat in the Primaries

In the internal party primaries on June 10, 2014 to determine the candidates for the US House of Representatives before the main election in November , Brat surprisingly prevailed against Eric Cantor with 36,110 votes with a low turnout of 12.9 percent , despite his significantly larger campaign budget received only 28,898 votes. In the election campaign, Brat had voiced the accusation that Cantor was not conservative enough because he wanted to approve President Obama's planned immigration reform. Cantor then resigned his position as Republican majority leader in the House of Representatives, and later also his mandate. This made a by-election for the remaining legislative period necessary, which Brat won on election day , November 4, 2014, against the Democrat Jack Trammell as well as the regular election held at the same time for the session from January 3, 2015. In the 2016 election he was approved; his mandate in the 115th Congress ran until January 3, 2019. In the 2018 elections , he lost his mandate to the Democrat Abigail Spanberger , who prevailed with 50% to 48% against Brat.
