Jeremiah Morton
Jeremiah Morton (born September 3, 1799 in Fredericksburg , Virginia , † November 28, 1878 in Orange County , Virginia) was an American politician . He was the younger brother of Florida US Senator Jackson Morton .
Career
As a child, Morton attended private school, later he went to Washington College from 1814 to 1815 . He then graduated from the College of William & Mary in 1819 . He then studied law and was eventually admitted to the bar. He opened a law practice in Raccoon Ford , Virginia.
Morton later had to give up his profession as a lawyer because of an illness and then worked in agriculture. He was elected a Whig to the United States House of Representatives in 1848 . He worked there between 1849 and 1851. When he lost re-election in 1850, he returned to farming. He was also a member of the Virginia Secession Convention in 1861 . He was also a trustee of the Theological Seminary of Virginia in Alexandria .
Jeremiah Morton died on November 28, 1878 on the Lessland estate . He was buried in his old home, Morton Hall , Orange County.
