William A. Burwell

William Armisted Burwell (born March 15, 1780 in Boydton , Mecklenburg County , Virginia , †  February 16, 1821 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1806 and 1821 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Burwell studied at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg . In 1802 he moved to Franklin County . He was a personal friend of President Thomas Jefferson and became a member of the Democratic Republican Party which he founded in the late 1790s . At times he served as Jefferson's private secretary. Between 1804 and 1806 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives .

After the resignation of the member of Parliament Christopher H. Clark , Burwell was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington at the by-election due for the 13th seat of Virginia, where he took up his new mandate on December 1, 1806. After eleven re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on February 16, 1821 . During this time, the British-American War of 1812 took place . Since 1813 he represented the 14th  electoral district of his state.
