John Letcher

John Letcher (born March 29, 1813 in Lexington , Virginia , † January 26, 1884 ibid) was an American attorney, member of the House of Representatives of the United States , member of the House of Representatives of Virginia and Governor of Virginia.

Letcher was born in Lexington on March 29, 1813 and studied law. In 1851 he helped draft the Virginia Constitution. That same year he was elected a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives. Letcher was re-elected three times and served in Congress until 1859. On January 1, 1860, he took office as governor of Virginia . Actually opponents of the secession, he joined her when Virginia declared her exit from the Union. During the Civil War , his house was burned down by Union troops and he himself was briefly imprisoned when it ended. Nevertheless, he spoke out in favor of reconciliation with the north. He returned to practice as a lawyer and was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives from 1875 to 1877 .

Letcher died in Lexington on January 26, 1884.
