Robert Williams Daniel, Jr. (born March 17, 1936 in Richmond , Virginia , †  February 4, 2012 in Jupiter , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1973 and 1983 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Daniel was the son of the banker and Titanic survivor Robert Daniel senior (1884-1940) and his third wife Charlotte Randolph Bemiss Christian (1890-1968).

He attended the Fay School in Southborough ( Massachusetts ) between 1946 and 1949 and then until 1954 the Woodberry Forest School in Virginia. Between 1954 and 1958 he studied at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville . In 1959 he became a reserve officer in the US Army . He then studied at Columbia University in New York City until 1961 . In the following years he worked as a farmer, financial analyst, businessman and teacher. Between 1964 and 1968 he worked for the CIA . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1972 he was a delegate to the Regional Republican Convention in Virginia and the Republican National Convention in Miami Beach , where President Richard Nixon was nominated for re-election.

In the 1972 congressional election , Daniel was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Watkins Moorman Atonement on January 3, 1973 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1983 . During this time, among other things, the end of the Vietnam War and the Watergate affair fell . Daniel was a member of the armed forces committee and several sub-committees. In 1982 he was not re-elected. Between 1984 and 1986 he served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense in the Department of Defense . From 1990 to 1993 he worked in the Ministry of Energy , where he was head of the intelligence service. He was awarded the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal for his services .

Daniel later managed the Brandon Plantation in Virginia, which is believed to be one of the oldest surviving plantations in the United States. He was a descendant of Governor Edmund Randolph (1753-1813), who is also foreign and justice ministers of the United States was. Robert Daniel died in Jupiter on February 4, 2012. He left behind his wife Linda (née Hearne), two biological daughters and two stepdaughters.
