James William Marshall (politician, 1844)

James William Marshall (born March 31, 1844 in Staunton , Virginia , †  November 27, 1911 in New Castle , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1895 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Marshall attended the public schools in his home country. During the Civil War he served as a common soldier in the Confederation Army . He then studied at Roanoke College in Salem . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1870, he began to work in this profession. Between 1870 and 1875 and again between 1884 and 1888 he served as the district attorney in Craig County . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1875 to 1878 he was a member of the Virginia Senate ; in 1883 and 1884 he sat in the local House of Representatives . Then he was again State Senator from 1891 to 1892.

In the 1892 congressional election , Marshall was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded John A. Buchanan on March 4, 1893 . Since he was not nominated for re-election by his party in 1894, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1895 . After his time in the US House of Representatives ended, Marshall practiced law again. In 1901 he was a delegate to a meeting to revise the Virginia Constitution. He died in New Castle on November 27, 1911.
