Thomas Milburn "Tom" Davis III (* 5. January 1949 in Minot , North Dakota ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . Between 1995 and 2008 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Davis studied at the United States Capitol Page School and then until 1971 at Amherst College in Massachusetts . In 1971 and 1972 he served in the US Army , whose reserve he was a member until 1979. By 1975 he studied law at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville . Then he worked as a private businessman. At the same time he embarked on a political career. Between 1980 and 1994 he served on the Fairfax County County Council ; from 1991 he was its chairman.

In the 1994 election , Davis was elected to the Eleventh Congressional District of Virginia in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded the previously defeated Democrat Leslie L. Byrne on January 3, 1995 . After five re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on November 24, 2008 . From 2003 to 2007 he was chairman of the Committee on Government Reform ; between 1999 and 2003 he chaired the National Republican Congressional Committee .

After stepping down from Congress, Thomas Davis worked for a consulting firm in Washington. He was president of the moderate intra-party organization Republican Main Street Partnership . At times he gave lectures on politics at various universities. Since December 2010, Davis has served on the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority .

Davis is married and has three children.
