Elaine Goodman Luria (born August 15, 1975 in Birmingham , Alabama , United States ) is an American politician . As a member of the Democratic Party , she has held the second seat of the state of Virginia in the United States House of Representatives since January 3, 2019 . She was elected to this office on November 6, 2018 and was sworn in on January 3, 2019.

Life

Luria is of Jewish descent (see: Jews in the United States ) and was born on August 15, 1975 in Birmingham , Alabama . Her mother Michelle, the family was in 1906 by Jasper the German Reich and Eastern Europe immigrated and had goods to coal - miners in Walker County sold. Her great-grandfather helped plant a Liberal Judaism congregation in Jasper, and the family joined Temple Emanu-El in Birmingham, where Luria was raised. Her mother and grandmother worked for the National Council of Jewish Women (her mother was president), Hadassah , the Temple Emanu-El Sisterhood, and the Birmingham Jewish Federation . Both of her grandmothers served in the United States Navy .

Luria graduated from Indian Springs School in 1993 and the United States Naval Academy in 1997, with degrees in physics and history and French as a minor. From 2004 she attended the Nuclear Power School in Goose Creek , South Carolina . During her service in the United States Navy, she served on the USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19) . She received her Masters in Industrial Engineering from Old Dominion University . Her husband, Robert Blondin, is a former commanding officer who served in the United States Navy for 27 years.

Military career

Luria served as a United States Navy officer and engineer on nuclear reactors for over 20 years . She is the first woman to spend her entire service on a warship . At first she served on the USS O'Brien (DD-975) , a destroyer . There she was responsible for the BGM-109 Tomahawk and supervised a department of 15 people. She became Reactor Controls Division Officer on the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) , an aircraft carrier that served in the Middle East . Then she was on the cruiser USS Anzio (CG-68) and later coordinator in the United States Fleet Forces Command , where she oversaw the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) . Most recently she commanded the Assault Craft Unit TWO with 400 seamen from 2014 to 2017 .

Political career

In the 2018 election, Luria ran for the second seat of the state of Virginia in the United States House of Representatives . In the Democratic Party's primary , she won 62 percent against Karen Mallard and in the November 6, 2018 elections, she beat Republican Scott Taylor , who had previously held the second seat, with 51.1 percent of the vote.
