The USS Anzio (CG-68) is a guided missile cruiser of the Ticonderoga-class cruiser in the service of the United States Navy . It is named after the Italian city of Anzio , on the coast of which Operation Shingle took place during World War II .

history

CG-68 was commissioned in 1987 and laid down at Ingalls Shipbuilding in August 1989 . The construction took over a year, on November 2, 1989 the ship was launched and was christened. After the final equipment, the Anzio was officially put into service in February 1992.

In May and June 2005, the Anzio participated with USS Cole (DDG-67) and USS Tortuga (LSD-46) in BALTOPS , a multinational exercise in the Baltic Sea. On November 10, 2006, the Anzio was with the combat group around the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) in the Arabian Sea when the distress signal of an Iranian dhow was received. The Sinaa fishing boat , which was about 140 miles off the coast of Pakistan and whose home port was in Kubala , had run out of fuel and drinking water; the Anzio then sent food and fuel to the ship. A similar incident occurred on February 13, 2007, on the same voyage, when the Anzio helped the Pakistani Dau Al-Sanaullah with food and fuel. In May 2007 the ship returned to Naval Station Norfolk .

In 2009 the Anzio moved to the Mediterranean and on to the Indian Ocean, where she was the flagship of Combined Task Force 151 , which fought piracy off the coast of Somalia . In May 2011, the cruiser sailed alongside the USS George HW Bush (CVN-77) in Arab and European waters. The ship was supposed to be decommissioned on March 31, 2013. The Navy later decided against it and kept the Anzio .
