List of Ticonderoga-class cruisers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ticonderoga-class cruisers list includes all of the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruisers . A total of 27 units were built, 22 of which are still in service. The only operator of the class is the United States Navy .

There were seven other cruiser classes before the Ticonderoga class , but all of them disappeared by the mid- 1990s at the latest . They all had different areas of responsibility. At the moment there is no direct successor class.

construction

The first ship was ordered in September 1978. Almost two years later it was laid down and put into service in 1983 after three years of construction. The last cruiser of the class was ordered in February 1988, laid down in 1991 and entered service in 1994.

A total of 27 units with the IDs CG-47 to CG-73 were built at two shipyards:

Name of the shipyard number
Bath Iron Works 8th
Ingalls shipbuilding 19th

Between 2004 and 2006, the first five units ( CG-47 to CG-51 ) were taken out of service, as they were still equipped with the older Mark-26 double-arm starter . Since no more suitable missiles are produced, they have become virtually defenseless and therefore deactivated.

The remaining 22 cruisers are equipped with the Mk 41 Vertical Launching System . They should each have a service life of 40 years, i.e. they should be decommissioned between 2026 and 2034. Modernization began in 2008, and further measures are planned. As the replacement cruisers of Project CG (X) have been canceled, no successor class is currently determined.

Stationings

The 22 ships are spread across 5 different ports . These are in detail:
