Peter J. Otey

Peter Johnston Otey (born December 22, 1840 in Lynchburg , Virginia , †  May 4, 1902 ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1902 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Peter Otey attended private schools in his home country and graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington in 1859 . Then he worked in the construction industry. During the Civil War he served in the Confederation Army . After the war he worked in the railroad business. He was involved in the founding and development of the Lynchburg & Durham Railroad and became its President. Otey was also involved in the banking industry. He was also the manager of Rivermont Land Co. At the same time, he pursued a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the 1894 congressional election , Otey was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the sixth constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Paul C. Edmunds on March 4, 1895 . After three re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on May 4, 1902 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . In July 1896, Peter Otey attended the Democratic National Convention in Chicago as a delegate .
